The appointment was today so I got there and was super excited to get a piece that I've been thinking a long time about! Alan gets in and basically tells me that he wasn't really vibing with my idea and asked if I had any other backups instead... I appreciate and respect his honesty in telling me this because I think it's super important that an artist feel inspired by their commission requests. It's just like bro...You definitely could have called me at any point within the past month BEFORE I took off work for the day and came all the way to Oakland to have the pleasure of not getting tattooed (sarcasm). Just felt like my brief experience with Old Crow/Alan was handled a little poorly and unprofessionally. I had been researching artists to develop my vision and really liked the artwork of Matt Leibowitz. This was my first tattoo and my consult with Matt was really helpful. He gave me tips on what to expect, how it will look and had thoughtful ideas on how best to represent my vision. The day of the tattoo went very smooth. Everyone in the shop was very cool and the place is chill. (Good music and a very cool dog!) Matt was relaxed and easy to talk to about most anything and he worked with precision. During our consult, we chatted, I showed him pictures, and he understood what I wanted; then he did a quick, rough sketch that we fined tuned a little. If I could give Old Crow Tattoo 10 stars I would. I have been coming here around 4 years now, and there's no place I'd rather be tattooed. I've gotten 8 tattoos by Bryan, 1 from Tommy, Jordan and Dave and a guest artist. It's always such an amazing time! The shop ambiance is one of the best I have ever seen, and the artists are so thoughtful with each other and their clients. You're not just getting tattooed at Old Crow- you're getting personally curated art which will continue to live with you! Especially if you find an artist you jive with! Artist "accidentally" tattooed a  1/2 inch line through my tattoo that wasn't supposed to be there - Unprofessional, sketchy, non-transparent artist.This past Saturday on my birthday, I went into Old Crow Tattoo for a walk-in appointment. Granted anytime you go to a new tattoo studio/artist, it is risky, but the studio had great reviews so I thought I would be fine. I've had plenty of walk-in appointments that have ended very well. 20 minutes into the tattoo as the artist was completing the outline, I heard a big bang. I immediately knew something was not right, but the artist did not say anything to me other than he needed to switch out the table. I looked back at my arm, which was laying on a table beside the massage-type table I was lying face down on. I saw a mark that was of concern, but I thought it could be smeared ink because the artist did not say anything to me. Fast forward to the completion of my tattoo, he then tells me that when the table fell, he accidentally drew a  1/2 inch black line through my tattoo, and there was "Nothing he could do about it." I have a full-sleeve on my right arm, almost a full-sleeve on my left arm and 7 other tattoos on my body. I have never had this happen before (OR if it did, the artist was able to correct it without me noticing). I also didn't feel the table move because my arm was directly laying on it. There was a big bang, which most likely meant he either dropped or hit something. I know tattoos aren't perfect - that's the beauty of them; however, this was absolutely a preventable mistake.He then goes on to down-play the situation and say, "Most artists wouldn't even tell you" and "No one will notice except you." First of all, I immediately noticed so not mentioning it would have made things absolutely worse. He should've told me when it happened if he knew he couldn't fix it so we could have possibly course-corrected. Secondly, it doesn't matter what others think. You get a tattoo because it is something you want. After I left, I sent pictures to several friends who immediately noticed without me saying anything. He ended up charging me $100 (shop minimum) versus the originally discussed $180-$220 and offered to try and cover it with color once it heals. No way will I ever go back to that studio. This review is for their resident artist, Alan Chan. Compared to my past experience with another artist at Old Crow, this had turned out to be a very unpleasant experience. I had a consultation with Alan in mid-November for a small bird tattoo on the back of my hand and it went fine. He was friendly, seemed confident and totally accommodating. He charged me $250 deposit for him to do the drawing/design, which was reasonable. We booked the tattoo appointment for a month later. About 2 weeks after the consultation, I emailed him reference images and he replied with no further questions. The day before tattooing, I called the shop to confirm our 1pm appointment. When I arrived at Old Crow on the day of our appointment, Alan was not there. He texted me saying he was running late and ended up showing up 15 min late. After rushing to get stuff situated, he came out to the waiting area with his iPad to show me his "drawing". It was basically just a quick doodle of a bird that didn't even match what I asked for. There were also a few bird photos downloaded from the internet that he casually pasted on top of a photo of my hand. There was no thought or design in the whole process. I was not happy with the result. He started convincing me to change my idea and blamed that I emailed him irrelevant reference images. Then he told he was not feeling well and had to go home (!) and told me to reschedule the appointment. I asked for my deposit refund and canceled the whole thing.This is as unprofessional as it can get. I've been referring many people to Old Crow but this was really disappointing. My friend walked in because it was walk in welcome. One of the artists asked Alan if he has time to do my friend tattoo she was asking for a small heart. He printed the heart of like googl, she asked how does it look on her neck I said well it doesn't look like a heart it was more of a circle. He got pissed and said i shouldn't have let your friend come back here to watch if she wasn't going to be helpful. Lol. Which was totally unprofessionally. My friend asked if he can redo it, she even drew what a heart looks like he refused to even draw a heart and kept saying the one she had already that he printed of the computer looked good and refused to fix it. Like who's getting the tattoo? Not him my friend is. He's an artist who did not even want to draw a simple heart and was bitching the whole time saying he doesn't have time and saying he has to go look at an apartment well he shouldn't have agreed and said he had time to do a simple heart. We left she didn't get tatted, she has many tattoos and no artists have ever acted like he did. Won't be coming back here. Read Less

Flew in from Portland for a weekend and did some pretty extensive research on shops in the area knowing I definitely wanted a new tattoo while I was in the area. Being a California native for 25+ years, I had a vision for a tattoo inspired by the place I call home. Found this shop as a suggestion from a friend who's had work done here before, gave them some reference photos and a couple of specifics of what I wanted and they found me a great artist - Matt Leibowitz. I looked him up, trusted his art and was more than happy with the end result. He did work for both myself and my cousin. The shop is clean, everyone I've encountered was professional, setting up the appointment and communicating with the shop and Matt was easy (even from out of state) and upon arrival to the appointment everything was just smooth sailing. Found this place on Yelp and after a consultation decided to give it a go. The wait was a little long but tbh it gave me time to save up and really finalize the design. The first thing that strikes you when you come in is the smell of copal incense, or just a general clean and aromatic vibe of essential oils. The walls are a marine shade of blue, with a large wooden Buddha sitting atop an altar. This is unlike any tattoo shop I've been to, and I've been getting tattooed for almost 20 years! I've never seen one so open and inviting, both from the staff and the helpful artists (who have a very large drawing space in the front, and are always available for a chat if they aren't busy with a client). They are exceptionally helpful and won't suggest doing something that won't look good in a few years as opposed to right now. Some people may feel offended at this, but trust me, if they tell you something is too small or will blur badly over time, it will! This to me shows they aren't out to cash in on trendy Pinterest tattoos and take your cash, the will give it to you straight so you have an informed decision. Thanks everyone! Read Less

I had all the intentions of getting my tattoo done at Old Crow after doing extensive research on tattoo shops in the Oakland area. I was impressed by the artists line work and detail which I saw on Yelp reviews and their website. I thought for sure I would be leaving with an appointment date for when I wanted to get my tattoo done, but that didn't happen. Instead I had the most awkward interaction with one of the tattoo artists, Tommy. A few days ago I had emailed the shop with some ideas of a tattoo I was interested in getting and I didn't hear back from them (honestly, no big deal), so I took It upon myself to go into the shop so I could talk to a tattoo artist in person. The interaction was so awkward and the artist (Tommy) was hesitant and tried talking me out of getting the tattoo. After he made me feel like he didn't want to do it, I asked if anyone at the shop specialized in the work I wanted to get done (which by the way, I had already done my research so I knew some of the artists that had the type of style I was interested in) and then he said he could do it and that he could sketch something up for me. After making me feel so uncomfortable, why would I ever want someone to sketch something when they are hesitant about even wanting to do? No thanks. Maybe I should have walked in the shop and requested to talk to one of the artists that I was actually interested in getting work done from. Definitely ruined my vibes. Read Less

Unfortunately, I never got in to see my artist. Everything was fine at the consultation. I paid the deposit, put a date on the schedule. I walked into the shop on my tattoo date and they got the date wrong by a MONTH.For me, it's more than just an inconvenience. I had to take time off of work because I have a physical job and can't work with fresh ink. He offered a discount for the mistake, but the lack of professionalism put me off too much. I emailed him hoping to get partial return on the deposit, but he never even responded. Super disappointing.UPDATE:  The manager messaged me and told me they would get my deposit back if I named the artist and gave my contact info.  After a week or so of no response, I followed up and she simply said that they would not be able to refund the deposit.  No explanation.  Yay!  Double disappointed! Wow -- not even sure where to start! I came to see Hannah as my 3rd consult for a sleeve (1st real piece -- other than a random turtle I have on my ankle) I was getting ready to start. From the initial consult, I knew Hannah was my girl. The previous artists that I'd met with had me in and out in less than ten minutes, and while they were both talented people -- I felt rushed and they didn't seem all too interested in understand what I was going for. Hannah had blocked out an entire hour for us to talk about my piece and given that this was my first real ink (and was going to be visible since we started on my forearm) -- I felt very much at ease with someone really wanting to take the time to grasp the vision, detail, and type of tattoo I was going for. Hannah sent me away with some homework and we booked my first (all day) session just a few weeks out. I arrived on a Tuesday and was definitely a little anxious/nervous  -- but Hannah quickly had me at ease once she got started. Simply put -- Hannah is a badass human being and bleeds dedication and passion to the art of tattoo. I cannot respect her enough for her grind and drive to be the best at what she does, and her work speaks for itself. Six hours of a needle jamming into my skin thousands of times per minute later and my first session was done. The time flew by and Hannah was great at giving me breaks when I needed a few minutes. Two weeks later I was back for my second session and we finished up in a little over 4 hours. I thought her work was amazing after my first session, but once we added the map, leaves, and a few more details to the piece -- I was flat out blown away by how things came together. I'm not even near fully healed yet and cannot stop getting complements and questions about my tattoo and who was behind the work. I feel so lucky and grateful to have found such a badass artist -- and without a doubt Hannah will 100% be doing the rest of my work. I'm not a fan of traditional tattoo (though I appreciate it) and really love the black and grey, highly detailed, and realistic look -- which Hannah absolutely nails. Also, five stars for Old Crow as the shop is really put together well. The gallery in front is awesome featuring all different types of art, and everyone I interacted with from my initial booking, consult, and actual sessions were friendly and professional as could be. I had been thinking about what I wanted as my first tattoo for a while and decided on a stained glass California poppy design with symbolism for my family/friends incorporated into it. Old Crow is close to my house so I walked in to see if this was something they could take on. It couldn't have been a better experience. Why this place is the shiz broken down: The Spot: - Really friend front desk staff, incredibly sweet and an overall great vibe. - Interior and tattoo room is beautiful. It's half art gallery/half tattoo shop, lots to look at.  - Veggie spot - can't bring meat in to eat, love it.  - Supporter of local and national progressive politics - had NODAPL support going on.  - The back room where I got it done is big, airy and bright. Really nice feeling. The Artist: - My tattoo artist was Sean Gillespie. He listened to exactly what I wanted and was able to produce a couple of different sketches with border/no border for me to compare and contrast. - Sean has an eye for color and size. I've gotten a ton of compliments on my colored tattoo from people who don't really like colored tattoos. - Clean/Professional - took his time to set up, everything was completely sterile, no sketch vibes whatsoever. - Sent me on my merry way with easy to follow instructions on how to care for my tat. The Tattoo: - AMAZING. Matches my skin tone perfectly, colors reflect the area I grew up in (NorCal) and is big enough that it makes a statement but no so in your face that it's overwhelming. I came to Old Crow to work with Halley on an existing piece I already have that she was adding two. I really enjoyed the experience of being able to be part of my design. She worked really well with making sure that her work integrated with what I have already. The process of being able to look through books, trial and error of placing the stencil in the right area, and giving me time to decide if I wanted to add to it more or leave it as is is unlike any tattooing experience I have had before. In this case the tattooer is an artist and made decisions based on what is best for me and the tattoo.Also - The other artists in the shop we're super friendly and the whole shop had a very calming vibe. My piece with Old Crow wrapped up a little while ago and I'm getting around to writing a review now. :)I initially came in with an unfinished back piece my friend had started for free.  It wasn't going well (you get what you pay for) so I came to Old Crow looking for someone to finish up what we started, hoping to keep it in the same vein of what I had initially imagined this piece to be. I got connected with Stewart who was very frank with me that the design and craftsmanship of what I had was very poor, and what I initially wanted with my design could not be executed to look good. Cue sad trombone music. :/ He told me anything he added would make it better by default, but his recommendation was to go with a cover up.After several free consultations (very generous!), we came up with an entirely new piece, and figured out a design that was the right size to be a complete back piece and effective cover up. Stewart was incredibly patient, creative, and helpful in this process when I really had minimal ideas to offer him as he created something new. We arrived on a peregrine falcon sitting on a branch - a completely different visual from what my friend started, but something that could actually be executed as a good looking tattoo (unlike the original idea) and still kept some of the same emotions/sentiments of what I wanted to capture.Over the next almost two years, Stewart was awesome as we put this together session by session, basically going at my own pace based on what my budget could bear. He was so friendly, authentic, and chill throughout the whole process, and fine with my intermittent availability for sessions. The rest of the artists and staff were also so nice and remembered me and said hi when I would come in, and chat while Stewart was working. A real friendly and genuine vibe in the shop. Most importantly, the piece looks awesome!The cover up is not 100% done, as some more shading can be filled in on the feathers, but it looks great at is; not unfinished looking at all. Stewart has re-located from Oakland, and I have as well, which is mainly why the piece is on indefinite pause, but I'm still so happy with our finished product. If it gets filled in eventually, great - if not, still great. Never thought I'd end up with a full back/butt tattoo but here we are and it looks badass.I'm very happy with my whole experience and when I find myself back in the Bay, I will definitely come back to Old Crow for future tattooing endeavors. Halley Mason is an artist with a vision. I can not recommend her enough. Her art is spiritual medicine. Halley's style is intuitive, thorough, collaborative, and thoughtful. The work speaks for itself. Halley juggled her schedule to fit me in as my move from the Bay day was fast approaching. We shared ideas and reference photos by email leading up to the date. A few days before my appointment, I changed my idea for the tattoo design. Halley rolled with the shift and spent hours the day before our appointment pulling reference photos - everything from snowy owls to textile designs. I met Halley at 11am on a Monday. We spent about 1.5 hours talking about the design and looking at reference photos. She told me to grab some lunch and come back in a few hours - she was going to draw. All of this was off the clock, btw. She charges only for time putting ink to skin. I came back to the studio around 2p and immediately fell in love with Halley's drawing - it was perfect. I was ready to get tattoo'd. The process was easy and Halley's touch very light. She is an amazing human and great conversationalist - an old soul, deep and profound. Not the cheapest but a cheap tattoo isn't a good tattoo so I can't complain. I really like my tattoo and won't hesitate on going back. I came in to see David Rodriguez to have some great line/dot work done. We originally chatted about a forearm piece but the night before our appointment I was struck with an idea. I arrived and laid my chicken scratch drawing down and explained to him each area. With zero hesitation or frustration with this shift in plans we walked straight to the mirror and he drew it on piece by piece consulting me for each tiny detail. It was unreal how thorough and kind he was. He was meticulous with his artistry and created a stunning piece for me that I cherish. I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience. Having gotten 8 tattoos done here, it's probably about time to leave these guys a review. Ever since day one (almost 5 years ago, now!) I've been treated with nothing but respect from every person I've talked to in the shop. Everyone has been really supportive and helpful to help make sure I got exactly what I wanted. At this point, I go in having a much better idea of what I'm wanting but they are equally helpful. The shop is clean and well run. I've seen a few others getting upset about prices..but if you're thinking about cutting corners price-wise on a permanent body modification, tattoos might not be for you in the first place. The old adage holds true..you get what you pay for.As with anything, but especially at a tattoo shop, come in with the right attitude and be clear about what you're wanting. I've looked over the bad reviews and all I can say is that they are written by those bitter people you come across who can never find anything to be happy about. That's their problem. Long story short, if there's an artist here you're into..rest assured that things will be done right and you'll be making your friends jealous. I was nervous coming into it, but laugh about it after how well I've been treated over the years.Ps - just something to note for anybody who's never had a tattoo done..Don't be in a rush to get in & out (here, or any other shop) For example..while you might be quoted an hour for a piece, that could easily mean spending an 1.5-2 hrs at a shop..so keep that in mind if you're ever trying to schedule around an appointment or anything. Well I got lucky I guess, Sean had an amazing piece up for grabs and a spot open on a Saturday evening. The shop itself is very nice up front, lots of art and locally made jewelry to look at. The counter person was very friendly and brought out the owners cute little Chihuahua while I waited for Sean to prep his station. Sean made me feel very comfortable and seemed just as excited as I was about the tattoo. Overall, probably my best tattoo experience thus far. Awesome shop, friendly & accommodating tattooers. I would love to come back  and get more work done by these guys in the future. Just remember to bring cash because they don't take cards! Read Less

Disclaimer: I never stepped into their shop. This review is based on the customer service I received as a potential customer.I called them on a Sunday trying to schedule an appointment with a tattoo artist. I specifically requested an artist who is good with straight lines because I've been wanting an single straight  line arm ring tattoo. They called me on Friday and told me that they have some time available on the weekend to get my tattoo done. I called them back on Saturday and they nice guy who I talked to put me on hold as he asked people are in the shop whether they are available on that day for me. What I heard over the phone were laughs and giggles as he mentioned to the other person that I want a single arm ring tattoo. I guess my request is too simplistic and boring for them to be laugh at. PHILIP MILIC! if you haven't already seen his work you must be blind. insta: @pmtattoosI could write an essay on how talented and charismatic this dude is, but I know you won't read it all and you have to pick up what I'm puttin down or else your life won't be complete. This wasn't my first tattoo experience but it was BY FAR the best. Our session was scheduled from 2-6, but they called a week prior and told me he wanted to talk a little first to get more of an idea - so we met at 12 pm... and ended up finishing at 1 AM. I'm no artist and I had no idea my vision would take as long as it did, but Philip was so genuinely happy to be at his shop, tattooing the same fidgety person throughout his Saturday night, that he agreed to do it. We met for about five minutes, I said almost three words, showed him one picture of a prior piece he did that I loved, and he told me to come back in about two hours and he would have the sketch done. I walked around the beautiful lake that's right across the street, and when I came back he had EXACTLY what I wanted down on paper. I didn't have to change a single thing about it.The tattoo that Philip did for me has an insane amount of straight lines and symmetry, which is what he's respectfully known for in the Bay Area. He placed and replaced one of the stencils on me, had me seen by all of the other artists for their opinion, and measured with rulers just so everything would be completely symmetrical. These pieces are on the back of both my thighs, which is an extremely sensitive and difficult area to tattoo (or so I tell myself); I also have zero pain tolerance nor control of my reflexes.. So my legs were twitching like crazy and making it impossible for him to draw a straight line. He did both the outlines really quickly and told me he would use numbing gel to do the rest of the tattoo and as soon as he put the gel on I felt no pain. I don't know why every artist doesn't use this, but I should have asked him what that shit was cause damn. He did the first leg for what felt like 2/3rds of the time, and the second went by so fast I didn't even have time to twitch (LOL JK). But really, he took such a long time on the first leg making sure everything was completely perfect and said that when he did the second, it was so much quicker because he already had the muscle memory from the first one... That beautiful genius.Mind you the session started from around 4 PM and went until 1 AM, and I am a person of no pain tolerance nor patience. I felt so badly for taking his Saturday night (he initially wanted to be done by 6 PM), but he kept reassuring me that he'd rather be here tattooing than anywhere else. Philip is so eccentric with such a positive attitude, and he talked to me the entire time for distraction (he asked if I minded and of course I didn't, he's so insightful!), even if though I was being a total brat. His shop that he's created gave me the best tattoo experience I could of asked for. The beautiful decor, amazing eye for detail, and super clean and safe setting create an ambiance that I already want to return to, and I left a mere 15 hours ago. My tattoos are my new favorite thing about my body and I'm so grateful that I saw him and get to wear this art for the rest of my life. Even though it was in the most painful/sensitive area I've had tattooed, I had the best experience and overall outcome with Philip that I could have ever imagined. We caught wind that they were going to do a fundraiser for Nepal - $100, walk-in, palm-sized, traditional - so Kelle K and I jumped at the opportunity.  I got there super early just in case there were lots of people, and I was first in line.  Once they opened up the super friendly folks there were quick to get everyone sorted out and signed up.I got hooked up with Stewart for my tattoo, and he did an excellent job with it.I'll definitely be back for more the next time I'm feeling I need some ink therapy. They say "do one thing every day that scares you." So today, I went to a tattoo consultation with Jessica. I was terrified for all the usual reasons: fear of not being cool enough, fear of having a dumb idea, fear of "should I really get a tattoo in the first place?" and fear of living my life in fear. I arrived early, and sat in the zen-yet-urban waiting area, trying to meditate to the sounds of Beasties Boys. Jessica called me back, and was incredibly nice while I bumblingly pulled out my sketches -- I was hoping to have text tattooed in my own fine point hand writing on my wrist. She looked them over and said, "These are really sweet, but they're going to be too small." She went on to kindly advise me that delicate lines don't work well on the wrist crease, and for a good looking tattoo we'd need to increase the size pretty dramatically, or move the tattoo up my forearm. Not at all what I was expecting. I sat in silent thought for a moment, and she said gently, "Think about it. I want you to say 'Yes' to something that is going to age well and look good years down the line. Sit on it, and let me know." This place is hella neat. Great staff and atmosphere! I came in for a walk-in with Philip Milic and was helped immediately. I appreciated how he took his time and worked with me and my ideas.
