Walked in today and Mikey was sitting in a chair along with a girl artist. No customers in the shop. I wish I could give less than 1 star... I walked in about 4 weeks ago for a small tattoo on my finger. I was warned about how finger tattoos typically don't last long. I completely understood this upon walking in so I decided to proceed with my tattoo. WELL, let's just say I hope this tattoo doesn't last long because it is by far the MOST ATROCIOUS TATTOO I've ever gotten (this is my 5th). The lines are uneven and even missing in certain parts.  Some lines are thicker than others, and others are longer. The tattoo artist (honestly he should consider a new career path) tattooed so deep on one part of the tattoo that the ink is spreading under my skin.  This $80 tattoo will end up costing me about $600 to remove. DO NOT GO HERE FOR WALK-INS or you run the risk of being stuck with the same shitty guy who did my tattoo. Read Less

I walked in for a little tattoo on a Sunday. I was immediately greeted and @samuari_tattoo_therapist drew up my idea and within 3 minutes had it printed in two different sizes. This was my first tattoo and he was so kind and helpful and printed out a third size which was perfect. He went to work and told me what I needed to expect and was always checking up on me. The shop heard me say that I liked post Malone and all of a sudden I heard them start playing it for my entire time there! I felt extremely welcomed by everyone and fell in love with this place! Went in there with a friend to get some new piercings. She got her third ear piercings and i was next, i wanted to get my right tragus pierced because i already have over 13 piercings. Let me tell you i can handle pain, but this guy was hurting me! He tried over and over and over for 20 min to pierce my ear and could not do it, he was putting so much pressure on my ear and said "i moved" so he couldn't do it lol he told me he needed to try ONE more time and i told him i couldn't let him anymore. He said "ok i won't charge you" well wtf why would you charge me when i have NO PIERCING?? It was a nightmare, 30 min and couldn't pierce my ear. My son Anthony was murdered in Denver Colorado a week ago yesterday. We came to Huntington Beach to release his ashes in the ocean. We were feeling very sad and overwhelmed and wanted to do more to honor him so we found Dave at Newport Tattoo on our way back to Laguna Beach where we were staying. Have thought about my second tattoo, finally after 14 years I came around lol. I couldn't have made a better decision than coming here, such a positive atmosphere. People complimented each other on what they wanted to do and encourage others saying "That tattoo looks great!" or "The color way on that is really nice" etc. The artists always state their opinions of what they can do and what is recommended, but the final decisions are still left to the customer. Sanitation/cleanlinessSaniderm for healing post tattoo allows for you to shower and minimize the discomforts of healing. Not all tattoo shops have these available. I went into Newport Tattoo after multiple friends of mine recommended Kareem as an artist. I was hoping to get an old tattoo covered up. After a consultation with Kareem he told me it would be a bit complicated but doable. He was super professional and explained to me what to expect with a tattoo cover up. Please please please ask for Samurai. I had found out about this place from a customer after I asked about her rad tattoo on her forearm. She mentioned she has a tattoo guy in Newport and she could give me the information for him. I ended up messaging him on Instagram of a tattoo idea that I had in mind. He recommend I come in the shop for a consultation. I had this crazy tattoo idea but he was very receptive to what I had in mind. He told me he would sketch up some stuff and would get back to me in a few days.A few days passed and he showed me a few different sketches. He let me know if I wanted to change anything I could and that he wanted me to be happy about my tattoo. I actually really liked the first sketch he did and I went in to get tattoo'd about a week later. I was a bit nervous since this was a pretty big tattoo (for me) and it was my most detailed one to date. He told me not to worry and that he would take care of me.It took a few hours and he allowed me to take a food break. He was very very nice and personable. I went in to get both of my nipples pierced. My friend and I called in about 30 minutes ahead of time to make sure the piercer was in and they said yes. Once I got there, the guy at the desk handed me a clipboard to fill out and without going over the information with me, had me sign that they had gone over my allergies, the process, etc. I just signed assuming that he would do it once I got called to the private piercing room, but he never did. Long story short, my nipples were pierced WRONG! By a person who wasn't even the piercer!! Instead of piercing my nipples, he pierced my aerola. The holes he made were on the very outside of my aerolas. So. Horribly. Incorrect. A waste of pain and money. Had to wait a few months and get them re-pierced in a completely different shop. Had my tattoo done by Samurai. His talent? Off the charts. Very nice guy and very professional. Did not make me feel uncomfortable at all, and my tattoo is on my upper ribs, so I had to lay there in a bikini top. Not my first choice, but it was either that or no top at all. It turned out absolutely exactly how I wanted it to.  A dedication to my son who has autism and also has perfect pitch and plays piano/guitar.  He also covered over an older tattoo of a humpback whale that I had done 20 years ago that had faded... I asked him if he could fill it back in with more realistic colors and more detail.  It's just gorgeous.  Love both tattoos. Also, everything there is completely sanitary. I don't know about the other artists or piercers. I just come to get painted by Ariel.  I'm not covered but I've been painted by few other artists (Dillon Forte, Miahwaska, Sarah Gaugler, Grace Neutral) here and there.  My friend was looking to get her nose pierced while I was seeking a bit of palm ink as a gift to myself, moreso to drop a deposit if I felt a connection with an artist there.  Ariel's professionalism impressed me as we walked in and were immediately greeted by him.. There was another fellow there that seemed more shy (he ended up piercing my friend's nose).  I knew instantly that Ariel would understand the depths of his own being of the universe so I went ahead and decided to just do it that night because he had time. One thing I notice about Ariel is his mindfulness of sanitation! That's big for me and apparently for him too! I totally respect that. So I walked in on Saturday night, may 20th with my girlfriend. The tattoo artists directed us to the piercer. My girlfriend wanted an ear piercing and asked for some advice based upon her ear structure. He gave the classic answer of,"whatever the client wants we can do". Fair enough. Can you do a forward helix? No. They didn't have jewelry for it. Can you do the inner conch? No. Can you do the tragus? No. And this is a quote from the piercer-"women's ears are a lot smaller so they are a lot harder to do and we would rather not do the, here". Excuse me but if you claim to be a piercer: learn the trade, hire a woman piercer or find another job. We were completely disappointed in how our visit went. I am amazed at the skill, creativity, talent, professionalism, cleanliness, and friendliness of this shop.I had only one tattoo I got in 1999 when I came to this shop to get a small piece on my ankle. This was shop referred to me by my fiancé. She had a couple of pieces done and the big one she has is a work of art.I had a few ideas of what I wanted in my head as we approached the shop. It was a little busy but everybody in the shop made sure to say hi to us. The owner recognized my fiancé and asked what we were looking for. She asked if he could work a little more on her big piece and he informed her that he was booked out about 5 weeks. He told us that all his artist are amazing. So she got Brandon and I got Givi. We got a matching piece (corny, I know) and even though it was small both artists treated us like we were VIPs. Their work stations were immaculate and prepared like surgeons scrubbing in and placing their equipment. Givi drew the tattoo on my skin freehand and finished the outline and color quickly and with precision. I felt comfortable with Givi and during small talk I mentioned a big tattoo that I I'd always wanted. He was intrigued and asked me to send him some pics of what I was looking for. I made an appointment for the weekday. He conferred with me before our appointment to ensure he knew exactly what I wanted.I showed up and Givi showed me a computer image he designed and tied all my incoherent ideas and ramblings into a beautiful design. Givi did the outline in one sitting and the color of the top the next session. Sorry for being loquacious but I wanted to give my opinion of a business that performs a service that is with you for life. I referred my sister and she got a piece, she has another appointment for a bigger piece next week, my mom even is getting a small tattoo on her arm to hide a small scar this weekend after hearing us rave. My best friend and I went in to get Morse code tattoos and were quoted $100 a piece (seems like a lot for lines and dots) we ended up getting 2 different tattoos, ones we have been wanting for a while. While we were there this mother and daughter come in and were told that a tattoo they wanted was going to be $80 a piece. A few hours later 2 young women came in wanting 2 small detailed tattoos. This review is for Derrick at Newport tattoo. I live in Santa Monica, the almost 2 hour drive is worth every minute in traffic!! Derrick is thorough, meticulous and truly a great artist! I've wanted a small portrait done for a long time but have never found the courage or the trust in someone enough to do it. I was recommended to Derrick by a good friend of mine who also received a tattoo from him. He assured me that I would be in good hands. Promptly after inquiring about the tattoo, I received a very friendly response and we discussed scheduling, placement and what I had in mind. The portrait is very meaningful to me so I had high expectations for the outcome. He was very thorough, making sure I was confident in what I was getting and at that the same time super friendly (which really makes a difference when you have to sit for 2 hours getting poked with a needle!!) I was very specific about details and told him exactly how I wanted it. While listening carefully to what I said, he drew up the stencil of what I had asked for and a second one suggesting an additional ornamentation. I ended up liking the second stencil more and after all said and done his suggestion truly enhanced the tattoo. I get compliments on my tattoo everywhere I go and I always point them in his direction!!If you're looking for a talented tattoo artist and are in the area, definitely go to derrick. I read the one bad review and I completely DISAGREE - In my experience with getting something permanent on my skin, I make sure I do my best to communicate exactly what I want. My advice to anyone getting tattooed is be smart and take a good look at the stencil; make sure that's exactly what you want before it's too late. This is by far the best place I've ever been tattooed! The staff is incredibly talented and professional. They definitely know what they're doing and still know how to make the entire experience fun! Honestly I usually am on the artist's side. But I went in for a really simple tattoo and my artist derrick didn't listen to anything I wanted in my tattoo. I asked for bold lines and an animated style. I have a lot of other tattoos and was really disappointed. His line work was not very good and neither was the shading. I actually loved the whole experience, it's just all four times that I came back for touch ups two guys no longer worked there. I have gotten several tattoos there. I still have one tattoo that needs some touching up and I am bummed that I cannot get a hold of the guy who did this tattoo. The owner is always more than kind the last two times and had someone touch them up for me but my third still needs touchups and I feel bad going in and asking the owner to touch up the third one. My father died last November and couldn?t think of any better way to express the loss of my best friend and father than to have his badge put on my left arm so it can be seen while cruzing in the car or riding the bike. I have been getting Tattooed at Newport Tattoo since 1990...way before Kareem took the place over a few years ago. I have to say Kareem, Jake, Mike and the rest of the krew they got it going on!! this place is Super Fresh!! Not ascetically.... very old building but...well if you don't know you have to visit and see. They all are so talented no matter what your ""vibe"" is they can accommodate you. Being Tattooed on your hands and fingers is NO Joke!! and something to really consider before doing it. I just got my first tattoo here. Couldnt have asked for a better expierience and job done. Mike did awesome on the lettering (my whole tattoo consisted of words in cursive). Turned out exactly how I wanted. Not only is the art right on, the whole enviroment and vibes given off is great. I hate when you walk into a tattoo shop and you feel so awkward because no one acknowledges that you are there, and if they do it seems like an inconvenience to them. But not at Newport Tattoo! Not only is the staff friendly but they are fun and make the tattooing experience very comfortable. Not to mention the art that these guys/girls can produce is nothing short of spectacular!
