Had my first tattoo here and I'm definitely not impressed with the service that I received. They have a promotion celebrating their fifth year anniversary and were offering a selection of small tattoos for 25 dollars. I came in with the intentions of getting a crescent moon on my sternum and as I was called up to see Chris, I was told the tattoos were only for arms and legs only. Check out their Instagram post @riseabovetattooco and their post lists their restrictions to only hands,neck, and face. His vibe wasn't very welcoming and at that point I was annoyed so I just went along with him since he is the professional and I didn't want to stir up any trouble since the shop was packed with other customers. I got the tattoo on my wrist instead while another tattoo artist gave my sister her tattoo on her rib cage . I gave him tip still to be courteous but I'm not happy about the service I received and I did not enjoy my first experience here at all. Read Less

i just had the tat done today! When he finished it, I was so happy with it I began to get teary eyed-- because his work is so realistic!  My beige Pomeranian Pugs died a few months ago in March, it was a tragedy we had never expected.  Mr. Nava brought my pet back  to life and it will b treasured till I die.His technique is never overpowering He does what you want,  ________________________________________________(((Before coming to Rise Above, I stupidly went to a different shop, based on a recommendation, and someone else did my tat , with the same dog,  I was in tears after I left I knew I made a mistake, because it was awlful, and it look like a peel away .99 cent store kids cartoon? I've been remise in taking so long to write a review. Andy Nava has been the only artist I will work with for half a decade- even if that means flying across the country for an appointment. BUT the entire shop is AMAZING and not every male artist understands how to work with women. I love all the guys there- such good energy. I walk in the shop on a Tuesday night and they were not busy, I asked for quote on a small tattoo. The lady in front desk was cool and she was going to give me a price but the guy who acted like he owns the place kinda blow me off and then talk me down that the design I want will cost more because of the details needed. Walking away coz I find him arrogant as to the way he talks at you. So Stay away from this place the owner is a jerk. Don't want to so small tats and won't care about you if you only intend to pay less than 200. My first post was removed by yelp coz supposedly the moderators think I did not have any details. Everyone at rise above is super talented and friendly and it translates to the environment of the shop. I came to Rise Above to get a tattoo for my 18th birthday. I walked in at night, no appointment, and I was taken in within 10 minutes. Obviously this was my first tattoo, so I was extremely nervous and shaking, even through the tattooing process. Michael was absolutely wonderful with me, though. Arissa... BEST PIERCER EVER! I wouldn't go to anyone else for my piercings. Haven't had any problems, she has such a light hand . I have been pierced by Riss twice. She has pierced my nipples and tragus. Both experiences were completey pleasurable and I recommend her to all my friends. My experience with my nipples was painless. She talked me through the process and it was over before I knew it. Of course it was painful but after she was done, I didn't notice them much. By the next day, I didn't even notice they were pierced..I felt no pain. My tragus was easy as well. I had no complications with either piercing. Great experience here. We walked in, the place was super clean. The artists there were friendly and helpful. We wanted a wedding band with Roman numerals but they explained that with his skin and the placement of the band with thin lines that it was a bad idea and wouldn't last. And then instead of just turning us away, they totally helped us brain storm some ideas and actually thought up a really great design that incorporated my initial into my husband's band. Chris completed the tattoo in less then a half hour (prep and clean up) and it looks amazing. (Posted pics) The artists there have great personalities and really make the experience worth while. I got my "first ever tattoo" done on my back here about a year ago. I requested for 5 Chinese characters to go down vertical on my spine but was recommended to have it next to the spine instead. I remember telling him I wanted it straight...  Later when I was able to show off my tattoo my friend confronted me about the placement. He basically told me that my tattoo was really slanted. I had him take a back profile picture of my tattoo and was so disappointed. It was extremely obvious how slanted it was. I regret getting my first tattoo here done by Michael.I really wish he could have just told me that he didn't know how to tattoo it straight. I had originally seen JoJo's work on instagram (@Joannanguyenart) and totally fell in love with it.  After several weeks of lurking her instagram feed I hit her up and inquired about getting a piece done. I had an idea in mind, but no specific specifications (besides wanting it on my leg and incorporating some Daffodils into it). Joanna was very friendly and after a few hours of communicating via text message I booked an appointment with her. Yesterday was the big day! On three hours sleep I drove over 60 miles to go see her. Rise Above tattoo is located just South of the 10 freeway in Montclair - I live up in the Chatsworth/Simi Valley area; that should say it all! Everyone in the shop was incredibly nice, friendly, and welcoming. The shop was also immaculately clean and everything was unwrapped and set up right in front of me.  Joanna showed me the completed sketch (she had previously sent me what she had so far in text) and it was beyond amazing - everything I could have hoped for and more!The tattoo took several hours to complete, but during that time we talked about music and life and she let me take breaks every time I needed. Nothing felt rushed at all, and Joanna was a work horse! She didn't take any breaks until I was ready to take one. Her level of detail is incredible, she meticulously checked her work and she was very light handed. The price of the tattoo was also amazing! Quality work does cost, but for the size of my tattoo and the level of work put into it the price was very, very, very, very amazing. The end result is better than anything I could have ever dreamt of! She managed to take the concept I have thought of forever and brought it to reality on my skin! So ecstatic! Read Less
