Where do I start? I've been going to Vargas for over a decade now and he is one of the kindest most talented people I know. He can literally do any style tattoo which is hard to find in an artist. Also he's a wizard with cover ups! He's done tiny banger tattoos on me up to full sleeves/body pieces. His shop is also super low key and private, it's a completely different atmosphere than your regular tattoo shop the vibe is more personal and one on one without the distractions of a noisy shop. I finally decided to get rid of my past. I had a 20 yr old tatt that I despised having. So I researched my area via yelp. Found Vargas Body Art. I called and he immediately answered. Communicated through text my old tatt and what I wanted. He said no problem. Appointment only. Call and if he doesn't respond leave a message.  Returns calls with 24 hrs. Excellent customer service.  Professional.  Place is located in  business bldg. Not hard to find. Plenty of parking. Tattoo parlor is extremely clean. As he is setting everything up he is explaining what he is doing and packages for the tatt are opened in front of you. He is extremely friendly which helped me relax because certain areas were painful. At some point during the tatt process he sprays numbing liquid that easy the pain. Luis was absolutely lovely. He dealt so well with both me and my crazy friend I brought for moral support! I love tattoos but my pain threshold is babyish. And he was so great! He talked me through it and gave a totally fair price. The studio is great and clean and smells wonderful! (And he made a point to show me that the razor and needle were brand spanking new, which I appreciated). I almost wish I'd come for a bigger piece. Where to start! I absolutely love my tattoo, I've made my mistake getting my first tattoo done by a friend and oh boy how much I regret that. I searched for a artist once I began to reevaluate how much I wanted to fix my mistake and I found Luis. I came to him April 2014, looking to fix my mistake. Just meeting him I opened up my life and my passion for ink and told my story of losing my mother. After he made the sketch, he incorporated my mother, the respect of her death and roses into my art piece which I didn't imagine him to take my own story from just a hour of talking to him into a art piece of my life on me. I thought he was just going to just fix my mistake but he made that mistake into a beautiful life piece that I now carry with me everyday in a different way. My tattoo from Luis starts below my armpit flows down my right side and a little into the back (looks sexy from the back) and flows down where my thigh begans. This tat is sick. It is beautiful. It is lifetime. It is priceless. It is me. And thanks to Luis I get to carry my mother with me and have a sick ass tattoo. I have quite a few tattoos. My original artist is no longer available so I turned to Yelp for help. After doing my research I found Vargas body art. I sent an email asking for rate information ($150/hour which is standard).  When you contact a shop you should send a rough description of what you want/size/location. It helps so they can give you a better guess.Luis was quick to respond. He told me what he thought it would cost and how much. We set an appointment. Lucky for me though, there was a cancellation and I got to come sooner. The shop itself is in a bit of a weird location. It's in a building that looks like it used to be apartments converted to business. The numbering is weird too. When you walk inside though you're instantly comfortable. It's clean and there's art everywhere. That's another thing about selecting an artist. You want them to be an artist, not just a tattoo artist.  When I got there he had a print out of what I wanted. I wasn't a fan of the font. Speaking of which, if you want something with words, do your font research. Luis and I spent the better part of an hour looking online so that picky me would be happy with the exact font. He was super friendly and patient the entire time. He let me use his computer to search. I eventually found what I wanted. He printed what I wanted. The size was too big. Then too small. Then just a teeny bit bigger. Then PERFECT! Luis was pleasant the entire time. He never once rushed me or told me I was being too picky. A lot of times an artist can rush you. They know best, they're the artist blah blah and you can get bullied into something you aren't really happy with. Not with Luis. He was amicable the whole time and really wanted to make sure I was happy.The picky process continued with placement. He put it on and I asked him to move it probably half a centimeter. Again, he did this this as though it was no big deal. He wanted me to be happy.Now for the "scary" part, the tattoo. Luis has such a soft hand! It didn't hurt. Not even a little. I just laid there. He finished and then asked me to look to make sure the words were what I wanted. I had asked him earlier to make the font a little bolder when he was doing the tattoo. He had remembered which is why he asked. I asked for bolder. Again, none of the usual artist bully. He bolded the letters a bit and I was done.Another thing to mention is that Luis is a gentleman through and through. I have a tattoo on my other thigh. When I had that one done the guys at the shop were kind of dogs about it. Kept peeking in the room. Luis tattooed and was respectful the entire time doing this tattoo. From shaving my thigh, to tattoo, to bandaging he was always super respectful. I even made a dirty joke about it being the most action in a while and he didn't respond. Extremely refreshing.Luis' rates are extremely fair. I paid in cash (which I always recommend) and with tip I spent $100. All of my being annoying and weird and that was all he charged! I brought $200 with me expecting to pay more.I also want to mention I had a friend with me. He didn't mind one bit. He let her sit with me with his infallible patience.  So if you bring a friend, make sure it's not one that's too chatty or annoying like mine.The line work on my tattoo is amazing! I wanted something small which is harder to do. The lines and lettering is so clean. My tattoo is absolutely perfect. I'm so happy that I'm going to have him redo another tattoo of mine. We had talked about just trying to touch it up, but realized it would be weirdly colored  so I'm going to get a redo. The friend I mentioned earlier is also going to go to him for a redo on hers and a new one. All of this being said, Luis is amazing and I am so excited to have found a new artist! I had a great experience with Luis. His work shop is clean to impress me. He has a lot of art works done at his shop by himself and they are all look perfect. I like the way he made color on those art works.He took time with me to help me to pick out the tattoo for me since I was confused about things. Right when we started he showed me all the needles & the cap to hold the color are new sealed in the bag. I was so comfy during my tattoo done in this nice atmosphere. I've been going to Luis for years now. I was brought to him by word of mouth. I saw his art on a few of my friends and already knew I wanted him to be my artist before I met him. Once I met him I knew we would establish a long term relationship. He has so much knowledge and artistry. I can sit there for 5-6 hour sessions and he just enlightens you with knowledge. A very smart and humble human being. Such an interesting person. He never puts any pressure on you and you are in the drive seat when it comes to the art you want. A few years ago I decided I wanted a tattoo of my favorite plants, hops and blackberries. After looking at many artists and their work, I decided on Vargas Body Art for the vibrant colors and meticulous work. I had a few designs I liked. I met with Luis and he came up with a design that I liked, and printed out a few different sizes to put up to my shoulder/arm until I found one I liked. Then we started.The first session was outlining the whole thing with purple, and coloring in the leaves. I think I lasted a few hours and we decided to call it a night. I made a follow up appointment for a few weeks later. A few more hours of work and it was done. I still want to go back though and get some more done to it, but that's just because I do. He did a fantastic job. He is very careful, clean, and patient, and we had a great conversation and were joking around the whole time. He has a lot of respect for the human body and really is an artist putting his work on a human canvas.
