I just got a portrait done by Codey Doran from Hidden LA while he was guesting at Raven & The Wolves in Long Beach. I've known Carlos Torres at Raven for ten years, a legend in the Black&Gray tat world, but let me tell you, this young buck Codey is right on par with that same cream of the crop. You know how it is when you see a portrait tattoo. There are some that are absolute atrocities, nightmares where some poor guy just wanted a picture of his kid on his arm but it ends up looking like Chucky from Child's Play got thrown into a blender with a horrible case of gingivitis. Then there's those portraits you see and you think, "Yeah, it's alright." Like it *kinda* captures the subject in the photo, and it's not horrible, but you can also see the artist's limits?... And then there's the shit you catch on Instagram or wherever that absolutely blows your mind. Carlos Torres, Nikko Hurtado, Kari Barba, Chris Showstoppr, Sergio Sanchez, JAMIE LEE Mother F'n PARKER, etc etc etc... Most of these kats have been in the game a long time. Codey Doran certainly is no rookie and has been at it a while, but being younger than most of these aforementioned counterparts in the game, he deserves to have his name listed amongst em. And what also makes him stand out is his ability to have his artistic toes dipped into both black&gray AND color. A lot of artists are specific to one medium or the other, or if they dabble in both they definitely excel at one more than the other. Not this dude. I knew I wanted Black&Gray for the portrait of my wife. She was a modern/ballet dancer and has a very throwback 1930's look about her, and so I wanted B&W to capture that feel. But take one look at Codey's Kurt Russel 'Tombstone' portrait in color, and you'll see the kid handles both mediums with equal precision. Codey absolutely killed, murdered, DESTROYED this piece he did for me. I took a "risk" in that I didn't know him prior to booking my appointment, but one look at his portfolio and you can see his work is absolutely ri-DONG-koo-LUS. And if he's already working at Hidden LA with the likes of Jamie Lee Parker, Mark Durrant and company, and then also guesting at Raven & The Wolves amongst some of the heaviest hitters in the tattoo game, then you gotta have faith in him already. He surpassed my expectations, and my expectations were high. Like, out of the stratosphere high. And he went WAY over. The detail in the portrait he did on me is nothing short of artistic perfection. Such brilliance can be ruined by arrogance though. Fortunately for all of us, this kid is humble as they come and the epitome of humility. He wields the needle like fucking Bruce Lee dropping a Goliath with his One-inch punch. The hell are you waiting for? Book with this kid. His work is worth every penny and then some. And the other Hidden LA artists' portfolios also speak for themselves. There's no reason I would ever hesitate to book an appointment here, whether with Codey or the others. My tattoo experience was with the artist named Codey Doran. He did a phenomenal job on my tattoo. He's an exceptional realistic portrait artist and was such a chill dude. Very nice, very gentleman like, was 5 hours of pain but worth every penny. The shop is very clean and well maintained, they had music, funny movies, and shows to pass the time. Been coming here for years, and will never go anywhere else! Rich has been my artist from the get go! His friendly and welcoming personality is the cherry on top of his artistic vision and talent. He's exceeded my expectations in every session, where every drawing comes out better than the picture I described. He works fast, always on time, and never makes you feel rushed! He grabs me some water every time I ask to take a break, charges my phone when needed, and my favorite... accommodates the position I chose to be in to allow myself to read a book, play with my phone/laptop, etc... I started with one tattoo, and now my whole upper body is inked up! Much of my family has come to get inked up by him as well. In fact, my cousins and I came in one day to get tattoos in honor of my passing grandmother. He finished 4 of us in one day, and these were no small tattoos! Lots of detail, lots of ink, and definitely lots of love! We all had a great time while we waited for our turn to go. He brought out chairs for everyone of us, and had no problem while we would sometimes hover over him to watch him work/draw. Every artist here is amazing! I would often bring a friend or two to accompany me, and they would end up getting tatted by another artist while they wait for me. You can't go wrong with anyone here. Richard is a great artist but does not really listen to you. if you look at my photo..-the green was not supposed to be inside the letters it was supposed to be green shading arround it. by the time i noticed what he was doing it was to late and he had to do it with the green inside. the second pic- i didnt want that much shading of black in the circle on my throat. by the time i realized what he was doing i told him to stop. you can see the other side that its not shaded which is how its supposed to be. third pic- didnt really like the drawing he made for my hand. i tried to have him change it but he said id have to come back the next day if i wanted it changed. wanted to finish everything that day so that didnt really fly with me. he was getting a little hostile too towards the end of the session. he doesnt really honor committments.. if you pay him upfront he pretty much doesnt give a shit about you once hes got his money. i had to call everyday for two weeks to get a hold of him. doesnt respond to texts. hes a good artist, and can draw very well. i am very happy with my dog (4th pic) on my hand. but the main reason for low stars is that this richard kid doesnt listen. he wants to make the tattoo you request what he wants. i think he forgets that hes in the service industry, and its not about him. if you go with anyone go with Cody. he did my stomach with no questions exactly what i wanted at a very low price. oh.. and you probably should bring headphones if you dont want to listen to what richard likes to listen to. he will not plug your phone/iPod in. Stopped by a week ago for a consult and met with Jake Steele. He was super cool, listened to my unclear idea patiently. I asked for an appointment for Sat 11/25, and scheduled for noon. When I arrived he greeted me warmly and we went to work. He was super patient, explained what he was doing as he was drawing up the sketch as well as putting it together in a sweet app on his device. It was so awesome to see him work and bring what was in my head to life. His process when it came time to start the tattoo was meticulous. He was also super kind and asked how I was doing, making sure I was good. His work is super clean, and he's a pleasure to be around. My girlfriend and I made a last minute appointment at this place when another artist got sick last minute. They took us in almost immediately. Our artist was Jake and he was so kind and really took an interest into what we wanted. We were able to describe exactly what we wanted and he had it sketched out in no time. I was a tad hesitant for color but after we talked I have the most beautiful tattoo. I'm so happy that other artist cancelled and we were able to meet the people at Hidden. Found this place on a recommendation from a friend. Picked Richard based on looking over all his work on the website and we are definitely thrilled we did. Richard took his time with us, especially because my husband and I somewhat knew what we wanted, but really didn't have something ready to do. We spent an unbelievable amount of time trying to create/find the perfect imagery of what we were looking for and Richard was patient and helpful through the whole process. His skill is also impeccable as he also worked quickly and efficiently and finished both our tattoos in a short amount of time. I recently went in to Hidden Los Angeles to get a tattoo I have wanted for a really long time. I wanted to get a high vibrancy color tattoo of a fox that had realism elements. Codey Doran came highly recommended and after seeing his work on his Instagram I felt like he was the right artist for the job. He was very communicative about what my expectations for the piece were and let me know what might need to be changed to make it look the best it could look. Codey knew his stuff and obviously takes his work very seriously. He wants to make sure that he can put his name to good stuff. The session took about three hours in total but the time kind of flew by. There's really awesome artwork hanging all over the studio to check out while you're getting inked. The final product was amazing. Highly recommend for any sort of realist nature work you're considering, and anything with color that you want to last a long time. Brett Herman tattooed a black and grey Fallen Angel on my back. 100% satisfied with the tattoo and tattoo parlor. Quality of Work-- extremely pleased with the artwork and finished tattoo. Brett is an exceptional artist who composed an original work of art.  Communication-- referred to Brett by a friend. Corresponded over email. Brett responded to emails clearly and consistently. I drove from Central CA to LA. Effective commo is a must when traveling long distance to get tattooed. We debated a few aspects of his original drawing. I let him take initiative and go with the initial design. Tattoo experience-- took two sessions to complete tattoo. One +-10 hour session and one +-8 hour session. Brett is pretty gentle and doesn't have a heavy hand. He's completely capable and willing to do marathon sessions. Brett has a good personality and is fun to talk to. He also doesn't mind tattooing in silence depending on your preference. He tattooed for 3-4 hours then we'd take stretch breaks, but he checks in with you regularly to see if you need a break etc.. Price-- good value for the high quality of work. Tattoo Parlor-- possesses excellent vibe. Artists have chemistry and all get along nicely. Parlor itself is covered in the artist's artwork. Clean open floor plan. Modern industrial interior design. Very welcoming parlor for people looking for their 1st tattoo or 100th tattoo. I made the appointment in January and had it done 4/7 and it's just kickass. Marc Durrant is super cool and professional, a few people at the shop even took turns to check the progress. Vincent Caldwell absolutely crushed my Lord Ganesha! It was a large cover-up project. Vince took the challenge and demonstrated that he has mastered the cover-up craft; the piece speaks for itself. I made an appointment with Chris for a consul and I told him exactly what I wanted and he set a date , I came back , and boom we are ready to get started . Overall, the experience was much more pleasing than I thought . He made me feel extremely comfortable , gave me tips during my session as it was my first tattoo , and kept me in tune . Overall , this place is a 6/5 . Not only because of the work , the pricing , and location , but the quality of everything they provide here is on point . This place is AMAZING!Was put in touch with Chris Velasquez at Hidden (highly recommended by many friends), and couldn't be happier with my decision. He has quite the artistic touch and his needle work is fairly gentle compared to others I've had work done by. I had four sessions over the past 8 months to finish my half sleeve, and gave me a very reasonable price.The shop itself if great too, they rotate various art exhibits throughout the year, supporting local artists' work!
