We hosted an art show event last night for youth transitioning out of foster care at Black Umbrella and it was absolutely fantastic! Krystin and Kurtis worked with us the whole way through, from marketing the event, designing the flyer, curating the work, helping arrange for the food and then working with us on getting in tables and chairs. All the details! In addition to the management of the event, they were also incredibly patient and lovely to the artists. The art by youth who have been impacted by the system was personal and vulnerable and both Krystin and Kurtis couldn't have been more accommodating. The bonus on top of all of that was how all of the artists in the shop were part of the experience as well. Not only are they truly wonderful at what they do, but they are all really great human beings. Went here for my second tattoo. Did a walk in to check the place out. The art gallery was cool and it's in a fun area. The artist, Steven, was able to take me same day despite the fact he was about to leave for the day, which I really appreciated! I had an idea and a very tiny Pinterest screenshot of an outlined rose. We made a couple of adjustments and he free handed a fallen petal. He was very accommodating, after the first stencil, I thought it was still too big and he sized it down for me and told me he would decrease the size of the needle too. Disappointed. First off, I did not get any ink here. I went by to check out the shop and the flash based on their positive reviews. I came towards the evening,  with one artist behind the computer. After a while he looked up and said Hi. We continued to look at the gallery,  and the books . The artist got up, went in the back and we never saw him again.I already have a large custom color armband, 2 back pieces, and a chest piece. This was my first tattoo at Black Umbrella. After looking many times and hearing the high price cost of other artist I had seen amazing reviews from Black Umbrella. I was at first hesitant after talking to many artists but after coming to meet with Blake about getting a tattoo from him after seeing his work I knew that he could give me what I wanted. The environment itself is very clean and professional, which made it easier for me to feel comfortable. He was able to go over with me all the details and provided me a reasonable cost. Went in last Sunday with my husband so he could get a new tattoo and he just loved it. Brian was the artist who did his and while I was waiting I asked Blake if he was bored and if so, did he want to give me my first tattoo and he said sure. I got my first tattoo at Black Umbrella because my friend Melissa actually recommended me. I was completely nervous and scared but once I got there, all the nerves went away. It's clean, efficient, fast, and most of all painless (at least to me)! There's a feeling once you walk into the shop -- freshness and friendliness. It has an interesting flow to it, the black walls with the art displayed on each side and the tattoo stations in the back. The artist actually take out the equipment right in front of you (just incase if you're wondering whether the needles are sterile) they are! The needles and everything else are taken out of the packaging and set up right before your eyes. It's actually very comforting to see them do that in front of you (which puts me at ease at least). I've actually only gotten tattooed by Blake but he's so focused when applying the stencil and when doing the tattoo itself. He's fast and he never misses a single detail. He specializes in American traditional, but he can also do script & some black and grey. His work is spectacular and definitely something everyone should get at least once! I love getting tattooed there, it's always such a fun place to visit; whether you're looking at art or getting a tattoo. If this is your first time getting a tattoo I recommend Black Umbrella. You can be very nervous getting a tattoo for the first time not know what you want, where to place it, how much its going to cost, or how painful its going to be. Black Umbrella will put all of that and more to ease. The place is very very clean and lots of room to breath. They open everything up right in front of you, you watch them set up and you know that you are in good hands. They also have screens to put up for those areas that you don't want everyone to see.  Kurtis is the owner I met Kurtis one night about a year ago looking for a tattoo after my sister passed away. He was more than understanding and he is the best person with a full heart and soul. He will talk to you about where to place your tattoo the best way it will work on your body to meet the needs that you are looking for. He also loves to do Skulls !!!!! he enjoys his work he doesn't just do tattoos because he has too, he does it because he enjoys his job and that is important seeing's how when you get a tattoo you can just erase it. Not only that he will play whatever movie you want to watch to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. If you want to listen to music he will play whatever you want to hear. They go out of there way to accommodate you!!! When I say They, I mean that the entire crew at the shop go out of there way to give YOU what YOU want. Not what they want to do. They draw up your piece right there in front of you.Every since my first tattoo with them I have taken my daughter, my husband and all my friends. There has not been one person that has anything bad to say about them. All of them.We Will not go to any other place we feel the most comfortable here, there is no need to look anywhere else. There prices are also the most reasonable what more could anyone ask for.On a side note - they also have a gallery art shows. If your ever interested in showing your art work contact them. I have seen SSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOO many great pictures hanging on there walls and they also have craft classes. I have received two tattoos from the owner Kurtis Gibson.  I  love them both.  He has a light touch and makes you very comfortable.  His and the other artists display their art on every inch of the wall space in the back.  You can watch a movie on one of their many tvs.  I will be back next year for my next tattoo! He is a family man and gives back to the Garden Grove community whenever he can.Kurtis is known for his black and grey work and does a phenomenal job with skulls. His paintwork is just as good as his tattoo work as well. He is a down to earth artist who truly makes the client feel comfortable while being tattooed. Kurtis, the shop owner is by far one of the nicest guys around. As you step into this studio/gallery you immediately realize it's unlike any other Tattoo Studio. There is art displayed throughout the front of the shop from local artists. They rotate these pieces every couple months which is cool because it allows for artist of various styles to display their creations. This studio is family friendly and professionally run. We were able to brainstorm and come up with a great design that I love! He was ver detailed with is work! This is such an amazing and unique shop! The front portion of the shop is an art gallery featuring local artists work and the back area of the shop is a tattoo studio. I have been going to Kurtis for almost 10 years and he is not only incredibly talented he is a great, family-oriented guy. Kurtis is very accommodating and will work with you on your design and really make sure you are happy with the end result of your tattoo. Being in some tattoo shops can be a little intimidating and uncomfortable but I have never felt that way here. Everyone at the shop is really friendly and welcoming. Curtis, the shop owner, we have known just a little bit longer than the shop has been open. He did some amazing work for both my wife and me once, and we followed him to his own shop! While Curtis hasn't done any work on us at his new shop (yet), Blake - another artist who works there, has inked both of us twice each. Fantastic work by a young, up and coming (hell, he's already there) tattoo artist. He looks young but his work is that of an old, veteran in the industry. If you have the opportunity to get some of Blake's work, don't hesitate! Curtis is a low key shop owner - he doesn't run around like "I own this place." Humble, one would say. However, any artist's work that leads them to owning their own Art Gallery and Tattoo Studio should speak for itself. I can't say enough good things about my experience here! Kurtis did a great job on my tattoo...some of the best work I have gotten. He listened to my ideas and gave some of his own that made the whole concept even better...I loved that he didn't push his ideas on me, but instead really worked with me, and together we came up with the perfect design.
