My sister and I woke up just wanting to get the matching tattoos we have been procrastinating to go get. We went to this different tattoo shop and ended up leaving when we noticed that they were looking more into taking our money rather than leaving us satisfied with our tattoos and what we wanted. And then I found this place on yelp and went straight there.....I am SO glad we did. Love this place and will definitely be coming back!My coach recommended my friend and I this place to get tatted--specifically the artist Jacob. We both came in and made different appointments, and the process was super smooth.From walking inside, you're greeted and talked to by a person who asks if you're looking for a walk-in, to make an appointment, etc. The vibe emitted off then is super laid back and comfortable, and it creates an atmosphere that is easy to communicate with those inside.I made an appointment for Jacob and was given a paper to fill out, which asked the usual questions about health and guidelines, and had to make the $100 cash deposit. It's cash only at this place by the way, but they have an ATM if anything! I was completely lost considering this was my first time getting a tattoo, but the staff really walks you through everything thoroughly. They'll ask you what you're looking for too by the way!I came back a few days later for my appointment and immediately Jacob came over and asked what design I wanted. I drew mine beforehand--exactly as how I wanted--and I simply showed it to him on the paper I drew it on and he took it from there.He showed me the new needles and took them out of the packaging--so they're definitely sterile and clean. And then my skin was cleaned. After that the outline of my design was moved to my skin, and he got the exact place I wanted it on the first try! From there I was laying down and he started. Now... he works pretty fast and is so spot on with his work! Considering the size of my piece, it took around half an hour where I expected it to take an hour. The results were still amazing. Throughout the process a conversation would spark here or there, and it was a good distraction from the fact there was needles poking into my body.Once it's done he walks you through the procedure for taking care of it and shows you how to apply and change out the bandages he'll provide you. Went for a walk-in and I could not be more satisfied with it! Absolutely in love with my new tattoo. This is my second one and I can definitely say this experience was better than my first one. The staff at Guru are all very nice and are more than willing to work with you to make sure you get what you want. Albert did mine today and he did not rush me at any time. Annie did a great job with the execution and details of the piece. She was very attentive and paid special care to significance of the artwork, it was a custom calligraphy drawing of our sons name in Japanese. I came in today to get a price quote on a piece I've been wanting for a long time. Jeff, one of the artists, was quick to ask me questions and and answer mine. He gave me a quote and estimated time right on the spot. I said yes, and after filling out some paperwork, was on the table getting poked for a few hours. Jeff is very pleasant to talk to and incredibly talented. He sketched out my piece on paper and placed the sketch on my arm. He did the job with haste but without cutting corners and I couldn't be happier! He gave me instructions on proper care and smelled a few shots. He was as excited of my piece as much as I was. It made me happy to see a person really love what he does. The entire crew was also very friendly and excited for my piece. A few years ago my wife had a cover-up tattoo done by one of the artists there and it was impressive enough that yesterday she had an entirely new tattoo done. Prior to having the tattoo done yesterday, we went in on Tuesday and looked through photo albums of work done by the professionals there.  The work done by Albert was preferred.  He was not working on Tuesday but he would be working on Wednesday (yesterday).   On Wednesday we met with Albert, and he sketched the idea/concept.  The drawing was spot on (all pun intended).  The sketch work and finished tattoo took just over three hours. I got my 1st tattoo here. I live in San Jose and was looking for studios in the area and I found the best place. I had never visited any tattoo places Guru was the first place I stopped by and I was super impressed by this studio. The artist who worked on me (Jeffrey) was very professional and really listened to what I want. Place was very clean. All the artist were very friendly. Highly recommend this place for tattoo lovers.Price: In the reviews I read someone got 3 tattoos done for $150 so I felt mine should be done around $60-$80 but my total came to $100 for a small tattoo and I felt that was a lot but anyways they said they do free touch up. I've had 5 tattoos done here in the last 10 years (as of writing this review). I also had work done at their previous location on Saratoga. This is not the place to get a bargain tattoo but well worth the quality. Dave the owner and all the artists at Guru are really down to earth and patient with requests and willing to go the extra mile to help you design something that is what you want whether you come in with a vague idea or an exact drawing. This was a picture done right after my tattoo artist finished, that is why my arm is a little red.But a guy named Albert did mine and he was very nice and welcoming from the start. When we walked in, he asked us about what we wanted and made it easy for us to feel comfortable even though it was our first time getting a tattoo and so we would've felt a lot more nervous if it wasn't for him. Guru Tattoo is a hidden gem. After researching multiple locations based on artwork, pricing, and customer service, Guru is my top choice. Dave is an incredible owner who knows how to relate and talk to any individual interested in tattoos but also current events. I remember before and after my tattoo session we were discussing topics ranging from politics to him saving a baby (that lost baby now works at Guru as well!). Not only did he allow me to remain calm before my session but recommended me, Jopie, who is lovely and sweet. Jopie and I discussed over the designs I requested and immediately began working on it despite the session being somewhat last minute. During the session, she warned me about how painful the procedure would be on the wrists. At first, it was daunting, but the overall experience was delighting. Jopie and I conversed the entirety of the session and we had a special connection that rarely occurs between the client and the worker. In my head, I thought conversing would lead to being a distraction except my tattoos were EXACTLY how I wanted to look and represent. Luckily, Jopie is known for her work on Japanese writing and Roman numerals. When the session came to a conclusion, the price was a WHOPPING $150 for THREE TATTOOS. ONLY $50 more than the beginning price which would've been $300 since it was three and not one tattoo. In sum, Dave is not an asshole and the artists do care about you, your wellbeing, and the result of your design. 5/5 for this place! Read Less

I was determined to get the grumpy unicorn  tattoo for quite some time. I thought about for many many months. I scoured the internet and Pinterest for the perfect combination of magical and salty. I found one but it lacked the depth of color I was looking for. I wanted it to be vibrant with pastels and happy colors. However also with a peevish expression. The irony of a grouchy unicorn has always been the idea behind it. So I researched tattoo salons in the Bay Area and I read good things about Guru. I walked in to the A frame building and looked at all the books and I ended up choosing Travis to design my grumpy unicorn. It only took him a week but he nailed it! Very artistic and really professional. I'd consider another one in the future. But need to forget about how badly it hurt! but it was totally worth it. I went here to get my first tattoo and it was the best experience of my life! My mom and I had planned to get lotus flower tattoo's and just walked into this shop to see if we could get some sketches. It was a super friendly environment and all the artists were very nice. We decided to look through Jopie's folder and loved all of her designs. She showed us a sketch of a lotus flower she had drawn and decided to get the tattoo just 30 minutes later! Jopie is amazing!I've been wanting a tattoo that represents my mom and I finally decided to get one of lilies on my rib cage since they're my mom's favorite flowers. I've always been drawn to colorful tattoos so I did a bunch of research on several different places but Guru Tattoo had awesome portfolios for each of the artists. I chose to have Jopie do my tattoo and came in the next day for my appointment. I told Jopie what I was looking for the day before and she totally delivered with a beautiful piece. Totally happy and impressed with my experience at Guru!I browsed several portfolios and Instagram accounts from other shops in search of a new local artist. I found Guru Tattoo on Yelp, and the moment I opened up Travis' page I gasped with excitement because his art perfectly matched the aesthetic and coloring I was looking for!I called that afternoon (a random weekday) and Travis happened to answer the phone. He was super welcoming, and told me to drop-in anytime to discuss the custom piece I wanted. When I arrived at Guru, I was greeted by several smiling faces and the environment was really warm and comfortable. After chatting with Travis about my ideas, I put down a deposit and scheduled a time to meet again.Travis totally delivered! Part of my tattoo was already existing (the hummingbird and Hawaiian flower). He really listened to my ideas and just a week later, he created an outstanding custom piece built off of my existing ink. For inspiration he even told me he went outside in his garden with his wife and looked at their lavender and other kinds of flowers and plants. He nailed it!While getting the tattoo (two ~3 hour sessions) I enjoyed the ambiance at Guru and the conversation and laughter with Travis. One day they were even doing a cool charity event where people could walk in and get a snowflake tattoo for a $50 donation toward a charity. I live in the East Bay now so was looking for studios in the area, but didn't like the vibe of the one I stopped by. I felt like artists at other studios weren't as thoughtful about my ideas and wanted to rush me into it. Right when I came into Guru I was greeted and advised to look through their artists albums to see whose style I liked.I decided on Jacob since he had some tattoos that involved smaller detailing like I wanted. So I talked with him briefly and set up an appointment. He sent me a drawing the week before my appointment and was easily reachable by email.Just got done with my appointment and my tattoo looks exactly like the drawing! Okay, this story is gonna be a lot longer than any of your Once Upon a Times:Back in HS I told a buddy "I'd probably get a tattoo before I'd ever get a piercing" / "why?" / "because jewelry's for girls". Fast forward to the end of Nursing School "I'm gonna get a tattoo, dog, both (or even a tattoo of a dog) when I graduate" ...didn't happen. And even BEFORE everyone's treacherous 2016 had started last year, "I'm gonna get one before or ON my 30th birthday" ... nope!On with the not-so-funny story, I got into a Total Wreck with my cousin on our way to a walk-in consult at Guru, January '16. Was it a sign not go through with it? Probably, but here I am a year later quantifying wtf got me distracted from doing something so personal and life-engraving: car replacement, job promotion, the unexpected/continuous mind-racking of girl dealings; the list goes on and on. It only took an anniversary to trigger such thinking, then the rest, as they say, is history...You know how it goes: Facebook sends you an "On This Day" reminder and there's your 2009 Civic crunched up like tin foil in your notifications. One of your good friends rolls into town that same weekend and gets inked up @ Black and Blue SF after a 6-mo standing appointment. You still have some of those lingering distractions but something in your head tells you "go" (again). Aside from another shop and GURU regrettably turning down my design for reasons of being too 'specific' or 'unique'... they actually attempted to draw a mock-up on that fateful day last year. The grounds were clean, staff inviting and The Hut as I'd like to call it just gave off this aura of "Welcome ~~ there is no fragmented Civic shrapnel to be found here". In the end it didn't (and still hasn't) worked out for my original, "first" tattoo idea. So whaddaya do? "Secondary", alternative (finger) tattoo idea, go!This had brewed over after all the turnaways from last year, months of hashtag searching #fingertattoos on Instagram and settling on an image that particularly didn't have much personal meaning; just something to stir conversation or conjure this self-sophisticating image whenever I pulled a drink up to my mouth or scratched my facial hair in thought. A "Gateway Tattoo"---and then came an opportune moment: your parents are out of the country for three weeks--Do you surprise them with a dog on their return, a tattoo or bowf? Tattoo it was. I dropped in on one of my single days off Thursday afternoon and was greeted again by Travis. He consulted with me on three separate images where I mishmoshed the ideas into one. He called down one of the newer artists, Jopie from the second floor and she got her station readied for me in 15.She was pretty warm & communicative throughout the whole process, "you have really beautiful hands" Jopie said xD. She free-handed the image with a pen, made some adjustments and accommodated a lot of the details along the way. It made out so well, Jopie kinda hinted a suggestion to add another line or two. It was overall, a "spicy" experience as her and neighbor Jeff had described for a first inking. Especially towards that bone bend at the end... yikes. After about 20 mins of needling I was wrapped up, given after care instructions and sent on my way with Jopie's number & Instagram handle to contact.Am I 100 on it? No. But I'm picky, and what (high) percentage of people can say so for their First anyway? It's a baby mark. It's done. I took the plunge. It will fade with its placement and use, but the pricing includes touch-ups because of those pre-implications which I can appreciate GURU divulging upfront.So peruse your artist's portfolio, be Confident in your specifics, TRUST and Go for it. No regrets here with Ideas Three (big!) and Four in the works....still want that dog though. Read Less

Travis is aaaaaamazing. Wouldn't go to anyone else. His style of tattooing is beautiful and his linework is flawless. There's a difference between a tattoo artist that just tattoos and a tattoo artists that tattoos art. I went to him on a limb after seeing his work on instagram (@travistattoosavage) and told him my ideas of what I wanted, which was a Hogwarts castle morphed into a mandala. When I came in for the appointment a few days later, I walked into him having more than a few pictures printed of the actual castle from every which angle, and was extremely thorough in making sure it was perfect. I'm honestly so happy with my tattoo. It was my first done, and I've had a couple of friends recommend me this shop because they said that they had a great experience here and they weren't lying. I had the pleasure of being tattooed by, I believe his name was Robert. He made sure that I loved the drawing before it was stenciled into my body and that I was okay during the process. It was a last minute walk-in. True professionals. They did not rush me to get hold of the first available artist and get the tattoo done. They recommended that I go through their tattoo art compilation - beautifully put together in small notebooks for customers to browse.Ambience was pretty cool. The inner decor with hand-made art is engaging and you will find yourself staring at the paintings.My tattoo was pretty simplistic, so I just decided to go with the first available artist. I was introduced to Travis by a hot receptionist ;).Travis is super cool. I just had a vague thought process of what I wanted and honestly I was confused! When you walk into Guru Tattoo you don't feel your walking into a normal tattoo shop. The place is clean, your helped right away, its not filled with smoke and there aren't pictures up all over every wall of pictures of tattoo's that a million other people in San Jose all ready have. Guru is definetly a custom place and they do an awesome job if your looking for a girly angel, butterfly or something more Gothic...You can bring in a picture or have one of the guy's create something for you just from you describing what you like and you will love it and have something that no one else has.
