After my last ever final of my undergrad career, I stopped by to see if I could get a quick appointment for a tattoo that would commemorate my time at Cal. Mark was standing at the counter, greeted me, and asked what I was looking for. When I told him I wanted a Disney cartoon style tattoo in color, he told me that he was a comic book artist and that he'd be able to draw up my idea. This couldn't be any more perfect. I gave him print outs of the characters I wanted, let him know what I wanted and he said he could do it. I let him know the one downfall--I'd need an appointment pretty quick since we were moving out of state the beginning of June. No worries, he had openings! My appointment was set for the very next day after my department commencement. I showed up on time--should've showed up earlier because I forgot color takes a bit to set up for, but I was driving in from Fairfield and the traffic Gods were against me despite my appointment being at 12:30pm. His drawing was so perfect. I seriously could not have imagined it any better than what he did. Bodé placed the stencil and joked about how it would hurt being that I was getting it on my inner bicep. Great. I love how everyone warned me DAY OF.Yea, that area is not nice at all. I teased Mark after he was down with the outline that the part that hurt most was whenever he'd wipe after poking me! He took his time, talked to me about his art and how he got into tattooing and a bit about the other pieces he noticed I had. With him being a comic book artist (worked on the OG TMNT and other big comics, creator of Cobalt-60), the way he colored in the tattoo and shading is friggin BADASS.Mark Bodé is the man and if you're around Berkeley and want any color, cartoon, comic, portait work done, you need to see this man!
