As an Oakland native, Living and working in L.A., I knew I wanted to come back home to the bay for a tattoo.  As fate would have it, I found Tayah at Modern Electric. Such an amazing place! I got a kind of large rib/sternum tattoo from Tayah. She worked with me to make a design I'm absolutely in love with. Because the tattoo was on my chest she did an excellent job of putting up barriers around her station/ anywhere I needed to go in the shop so I felt safe the entire time. Super comfortable atmosphere here! All of the artists had a great dynamic together, and Natasha was incredibly sweet and accommodating! She ensured the drawing and placement were exactly to my liking, and her hand was gentle and painless. I had a medical emergency during the procedure and she made sure I was safe, gave me whatever time I needed, and even finished the tattoo and made sure I got home safely. Natasha is the most AMAZING TATTOOIST I KNOW. I'll start off with saying I travelled from Sacramento so I was a bit nervous getting a tattoo. She spoke to me the entire time she was applying the stencil and she was kinda hyping me up too. She was super understanding of my situation and accommodated me. The session took about 5-6 hours if I remember correctly. She often took breaks but I would too if it was that tedious. Afterward, she offered to finish my tattoo (this coming May) and she was so happy about it! I think she was super sweet and I definitely will go back to her for more tattoos in the future. Got a small tattoo from Sophia during the latest  fundraiser on 10/27. Unlike the other artists, Sophia uses the stick n poke method rather than the tattoo gun. It's definitely a different experience but it was 100% positive. The process is slower but I personally thought it was much less painful.She did the poison bottle and droplets in about 45 minutes. So far, it looks like it's healing faster with almost no bruising or scabbing. 5/5 would recommend. I'm definitely going back for more.Also, special shout out to Regina. My friend and I just got tattooed by Tayah. She was such a sweet person and made us feel very welcomed, like everyone else in the shop. She had a very gentle touch that made the tattoo part super easy and almost painless and she was great to talk to. I recently got tattooed by Tanya and I am beyond satisfied- "absolutely over the moon" is a more appropriate description of my emotional reaction to my experience at Modern Electric Studio. The space itself is wonderful. I felt extremely comfortable and at home. My tattoo took a little under three hours, and for the most part was extremely comfortable. That being said-it was a tattoo, it hurt quite a bit. If you don't want pain, I would advise getting a henna. Tanya was extremely attentive to my comfortability, asking me if I needed a break, how the pain level was etc. I can't speak to the other artists, as I've only had work done by Tanya, but judging from the artwork on the walls, everyone at this studio is extremely talented. I am absolutely in love with my tattoo. It healed beautifully, and I get questions and complements about/on it every single day, often multiple times a day. It's a portrait of my late dog, and it's absolutely beautiful. I'm often told that it looks like someone scanned a photo onto my skin. She is a brilliant artist, and I quite honestly feel honored to have her work on my body for the rest of my life. I'll quote the woman standing behind me in line: "what a beautiful tribute to your friend. I can tell from the expression on his face that he was a wonderful friend at that. I've been going to Tanya since she really started to settle into tattooing and I haven't looked back. She has done my entire right sleeve, a portrait of my dog, a feather on my head and recently started covering up a half sleeve I've had for 15 years. I fully trust her technique and artistic ability.Luckily for me, when they moved their shop from the city to Berkeley, they moved three doors down from my barber shop so now I don't have to travel over the bridge and pray there is parking! I got my first tattoo done here-- and it was also a hand poked tattoo (better known as stick n' poke) done by Sophia (@pio.poke on instagram.) She was super friendly, very accommodating, and her pricing is more than reasonable. The studio itself is clean but not air-conditioned, but they do have an outdoor garden area that does get a breeze, so if you're closer to the back door, you'll feel cooler. That being said, Sophia did an excellent job all the way from consultation (over the phone and email) all the way to booking and actually doing the tattoo.Stick and pokes feel different than regular tattoos (so she explained) and the pain wasn't too bad, and her rates are flat due to the fact that they do take longer and are pretty labor intensive. That being said, she sticks to her word on the quotes (thank you, Sophia) and made me feel comfortable the entire time, urging me to take breaks as I needed in order to drink water, eat something, or go to the bathroom. The tattoo turned out very well, and honestly it feels like a very comfortable and safe space to be, given the amount of female-identified tattoo artists that are here! She is also easy to schedule with and rather flexible with her booking, which is awesome. Sophia was a good artist to work with, and I am definitely going to have future tattoos done with her once I plan them!Other than that, each individual artist does their own books, so you need to contact them mostly through email, in order to book with an individual artist. They are also super popular so try to book a couple months in advance! I've also scheduled a tattoo with Natasha, who specializes in single-needle electric tattooing, and can't wait to work with her! I've had my third tattoo in mind since last year and I looked into artists both in east bay and south bay. I'm very type A and I like doing my research and having a plan way in advance, since tattoos are permanent! I liked Regina after reviewing dozens and dozens of portfolios on social media and various tattoo shops' websites. I scheduled an initial consultation about a month ago. Everything went smoothly and I thought we were on the same page. I was super excited and even asked my friend, an artist, to doodle some simple designs for me for reference. Over the course of the month, I must have sent twenty-some photos of ideas to Regina, which took more time to find.At the end of the consultation, we made an appointment for 5pm today. At 3pm, Regina sent me an email letting me know she was running late and asked if I could show up at 6pm instead. I showed up a little after 5:30, thinking maybe she could take me earlier. Instead, she asked to reschedule to 7pm tomorrow. Then, she mentioned that she usually tells her clients not to schedule anything after, which she failed to mention earlier. Finally, at 10pm tonight, I see a full refund of my $100 deposit in Paypal, with a message from Regina that she will no longer do my tattoo.While I appreciate the refund, I hope Regina and other artists will take better care of their schedules. True art is not to be rushed, and I feel like Regina carelessly scheduled me without considering how long it might take for my piece and others' pieces. Will definitely never come back here. Wasted months of time doing research and getting excited and waiting and finally being disappointed. If you have months of time to kill, then by all means, this is the right place. Read Less

The studio itself is amazing. It's in a great location, has amazing local artwork, and they collectively host raffles or flash days where proceeds go to support various organizations (i.e. ACLU, planned parenthood, etc.)! I'm all about sharing wonderful experiences with deserving people on forums like these so let's talk about Tanya. I heard about her from my business partner who has had some work done with her before. We scheduled an appt and after a very thorough consultation we began my piece. I had wanted to do this cover up for a few years but the ribs are a notoriously painful spot and generally a cover up needs more space and a lot of shading so I was procrastinating. One thing I noticed right away was that Tanya's work was all by hand where I had experienced previous artists print and stencil. Tanya totally understood my vision and executed it beautifully. I had never gotten a tattoo by myself before (full disclosure I'm a huge wimp and in the past have made my husband go with me to hold my hand). Tanya made me feel comfortable instantly and though i wouldn't describe my feelings as butterflies and rainbows it was as easy as it was ever going to be. I only found out that she had won the award for best of the bay near the end of my appointment but I wasn't at all surprised. I came to Modern Electric through word of mouth, after one of my regular customers mentioned a couple pieces she had done by Tanya Wischerath, one of the lovely ladies who tattoos there. I was instantly blown away by the intricacy of each tattoo that she had, and knew I wanted to go to Modern Electric for my next tattooI went into the shop first to check out the vibe and view portfolio work for Tanya, and was so so pleased with everything. I was initially interested in Tanya for her line work and soft touch, and quickly fell in love with her versatility as well. the studio is super homey, full of art and true artists who really love what they do. I made an appointment with Tanya easily, right there and then, for a consultation on a custom tattoo. Tanya was really communicative and open to all ideas I had and had no problem changing up the design to fit a different part of my body when I changed my mind last minute. she works quickly, and seriously has the most gentle touch. Well, I got my tattoo back in January and figured it was time to leave a review about it.I came across this shop when I had gotten a gift certificate to a different one that I had a couple of not-so-great artists, but inspired me to look around and actually put my first tattoo into motion. I figured San Francisco would have a good pool of talent to choose from, and I looked through galleries and read reviews, and after seeing a few pieces of art done by Tanya, I knew she was the one I wanted to do it. I sent her an e-mail outlining the idea behind the tattoo and a picture for reference and she got back to me asap. Not before long we had our consultation appointment set up and the date for the actual tattoo was two weeks following.When I went in for the consultation she had drawn up a rough sketch and we were both on the same page of the basic idea, so I paid my deposit and was on my way in about twenty minutes. Now, this is my first tattoo so I wasn't sure what the exact process was from the first meeting to the actual tattoo date so when I went in to get it I had pretty much no idea what the actual design looked like and I was worried, but as soon as she brought out the design my worries disappeared, it was exactly what I wanted. Tanya works very fast and did my entire tattoo start to finish in 1.5 hours. It healed amazingly with very little bleeding initially, no scabbing, and it only peeled for about a day. She was also very good with communication when I emailed her with questions about the healing process. Veteran / Novice Ink-Lovers Welcome.I often hear many artists say it takes two people to create a magnificent tattoo, this wasn't the case for me (It was all Tanya). I first started exchanging emails with Tanya to schedule in my consultation appointment and to explain my idea, and by the time we met for consultation, she had already gathered some references and had even prepared some rough sketches for me. I became instantly happy after glancing at her sketches and loved the direction that she went into. Tanya's raw talent instantly blew my mind, and was able to translate my vision into reality. She is truly a perceptive and gifted artist."She nailed it!" -- I thought to myself. I then ceased my search for other artists and scheduled in my sessions right then and there. I had a rough idea of what I wanted at first, but couldn't quite fully imagine a finished design by myself. But after meeting again for our first session, Tanya's final design helped me envision the missing pieces to the puzzle, and I went for it. (Don't forget the $100 security deposit & your references)The MES studio is a fun place hang out at, everyone is extraordinarily friendly, truly an artist's atelier; where easels are laying everywhere, smooth music playing throughout, all filled with remarkable paintings of their personal art collection on display across the walls. The best part was their cute dog Maggie; who's just adorable and just chills about the studio often asking for free massages. Tanya on the other hand is a bona-fide sweetheart, a "kill-em' with kindness" kind of girl, a super-chill artistic genius. But most of all, she's tremendously understanding and she really takes in your feedback into her re-designs. Not to mention that she's a rockin' babe!I had plans to move out of the country for work, so I really wanted to get a piece done before my move. As my idea required at least 3 sessions, initially no one was willing to pencil me in within a 1 month time frame. But Tanya took me in, and happily opened her schedule up for me. She was able to finish my project in just Two, 3-hour sessions. (1st session: line work, 2nd sessions: shading)On my left arm, Tanya's virtuoso as a serious tattoo artist is on full display and I'm proud to exhibit her work, proving to me that her craftsmanship had steered my project to the direction I was looking for. I finally did it. After years of thinking about it, I decided to just go for it and get my first tattoo. I had a work meeting in SF this past Friday (5/10) and was done for the day at 11am, so I figured, what better time? Super good decision!After reading the excellent reviews here and looking through the uploaded photos, I felt very comfortable contacting Suzanne regarding my tattoo idea. I contacted her on Wednesday 5/8, hoping to schedule an appointment for Friday. And she had room for me at 11:30, couldn't have worked out better! I told her the quote I wanted ("In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.") and she asked me to bring it typed up in some fonts I liked. I spent a looooot of time looking at fonts, and ended up going with one of the first fonts I found. Go figure. The parking is readily available, but metered, and there's a 2-hour max on the meters. So, if you have a long session ahead of you, remember to feed the meter! I got there right at 11:30 and Suzanne and I got started right away. I immediately felt comfortable. The art hanging over all the walls is amazing - be prepared for paintings of naked people surrounding you while you're tattooed. So maybe a little jarring for some, but I thought they were exquisite. Made me feel even better about being there. Suzanne herself was wonderful as well. She put me at ease and talked easily with me for a lot of the time, although we also fell into a companionable silence at times as well. I say that because some people don't do well with silence and try to fill it, but Suzanne isn't that way and I was grateful for that. I found the tattoo process really meditative, so I didn't feel the need to speak the entire time. I'll upload a photo when I get a sec, but I couldn't be happier with the finished product. Suzanne did a beautiful job with the lettering, and she also helped me decide on the placement (it's over my right hip, split into three lines). It's all perfect. Fresh ink from Tanya W is the must have summer accessory of 2012! All my friends had it and I knew I had to too. I'd seen designs that ranged from objects to portraits of wildlife and went to Tanya with an idea that combined both those things with a side of pork. She worked with me on a custom design that included tons of feedback from me, vision from her and resulted in exactly the tattoo i'd wanted. Her touch was as light as a feather (or a ghost?) during the tattoo which is saying something given that it was done in a pretty sensitive spot. Just like all of my friends get their hair cut by Dionne at Pretty Pretty Collective, apparently all of my closest mates get their tattoos done by Suzanne at Modern Electric.I'm madly in love with the horse/EKG piece she Sharpie-ed directly onto my inner arm, she inked beautiful fine art-y redwood trees onto my husband's arm and did a dumbfoundingly intricate pointillism floral tattoo on a friend's shoulder. The lady is no one-trick pony when it comes to styles. Added bonus: she has an incredibly light hand.This is my second tattoo and I was searching for someone to counterbalance the production line-type experience I had at Everlasting with my first one.
