Great overall experience at this shop. My wife and I recently had a baby girl so we wanted some work done to represent her. The person I spoke with was rude and had a major attitude. She was not helpful at all and acted like my request was crazy... I called the shop beforehand to make sure they could do the tattoo I wanted as it would be a little more complex. I wanted 3 words in my late stepfathers handwriting. I had 2 of the words complete in his handwriting and just needed one word pieced together from a note of his that had all the letters. She confirmed they could do it and when I showed up and re explained it she looked at me like I was crazy. Her response was that they couldn't do it and that I could just pick a font off the computer that was close to his handwriting. I explained that the point of the tattoo was that it would be in his handwriting...not a font close to it. Long story short she was totally rude and acted like I was asking for the impossible. I went home, took a photo of the note, cropped the letters together of the ONE word, and added the other two complete words in about 20 minutes. I obviously went elsewhere to get the THREE words tattooed, along with two other family members. I would not recommend this shop if your tattoo needs any more effort than picking a font off a computer.Read Less

Can't recommend this place any more, especially considering how many lackluster parlors exist in the Phoenix area. Super clean, with attentive and incredibly skilled staff.  I have mostly booked with Jon Garber, whom I couldn't recommend more. He is ridiculously quick, yet detailed with his lines and shading. I am beyond satisfied everytime I leave 5th Estate.The quality the artists hold themselves to is prime. I frequent Timo, but not as much as I'd like to. When I first started booking with Timo, I was very specific with what I wanted, and he exceeded my expectations. I noticed that he was pretty efficient with his time, and he never second guessed what he was throwing down. I was amazed by how much area he covered on the 4 hours, and the detail was top notch. The man knows his trade, and the other artists seem to all feed off each others quality, always exchanging techniques and complimenting each other's work. When we had pieces that required multiple sessions, he always seems to make it look complete  for me to get by till my next session. After a few appointments, I started being less specific, and the outcome always 1up'd the previous piece. The last time I went, I didn't have a reference picture, I just explained it to him, showed him the stamp I wanted to cover up on my forearm,  and let him freehand the piece on me. I have a huge gypsy face on my forearm, and I'm due for the color session, but it is currently my absolute favorite tattoo. I think I'm done with stencils and copies. I'd rather book a 4 hour session with Tim and let him interpret my words. I've seen some amazing tattoos come out of this place while in the chair and through social media. I'm looking forward to booking with some of the other artists at 5th Estate, but think I'm going to stick with Tim for a bit, his latest canvas art has my gears turnin.Aside from what I go there for, I have to mention that Retta makes the entire transaction from booking to paying an overall great experience. She seems to accommodate the artists as well as the customers, because she's awesome, not because there's an employee manual or procedures she's following. Over the last year or so I have gotten two complete sleeves by Josh Carter at 5th Estate and can't be any happier. Josh is a first rate artist - he is 100% focused on the task at hand I honestly feel like my work is the most important to him. Nice clean environment in a great location. All the artists seem to do a really good job from my observation. Fernando was my artist and was a cool guy that did a nice job on my tattoo. I'm only giving 4 stars due to the fact that they don't accept credit cards. It's a bit silly in 2016. Although they do advertise with V/MC stickers and a machine. Lex is the best artist at 5th estate. He improved an existing tattoo I had from a different "artist" at another establishment. The little details he put into making it better were amazing, and it meant a lot to me as it was a tribute to my beautiful daughter. He did another memory piece for me - what I loved was that he never told me what to do regarding the tattoo, but made excellent suggestions to really turn it into a art piece.  He was patient, and I appreciate the extra time he took to draw up a few stencils and let me choose which I liked best. Super professional. If you're looking for work that requires a lot of shading, his is IMMACULATE.  He can create a detailed, beautiful image without a single line. Regarding his line work, his precision is on point. Both times I went to him there was a two month wait, but it is SO WORTH IT, and it's worth every penny to have quality work from an exceptional artist. I'd give 10 stars of I could. That being said, if Aaron is still there, you may want to avoid. Apparently he doesn't know how to spell common words, I feel bad for my friend who has to get his tattoo reworked. Read Less

Try to get a color tattoo it was a women with a eagle helmet my "artist" said lets change it to a panther. I guess black hair black panther so that's it...so if do you want to pay big bucks for whatever they want to do to you then go there....or search josh carter the bad reviews follow him must be hard to be the weak artist at 5th state. If I was just giving my review on the shop as a whole, I would say overall, everyone was awesome. However, I was in the shop about three years ago with an original idea I drew and I needed the artist to just clean it up and make it suitable for permanent placement. She did what I asked and it was perfect! I was excited for my first tattoo to be something I dreamed up. I get compliments on it all the time. Fast forward to now, and I have recently met someone with the same exact tattoo as me. Low and behold, she went to fifth estate seeking a unique tattoo that would represent her love for her children. The tattooist gave this woman an exact replica of my tattoo. I'm confused on how this could be possible, because I would imagine that these artists are creative enough to come up something that may be similar but not exact. I don't recommend the female artist at this location. Read Less

I got my tattoo at Fifth Estate last weekend and had a really excellent experience. First of all, I look like a total nerd in a tattoo shop because I'm pretty much preppy mcpreps a lot but Reta at the front desk definitely helped me to feel at ease.Because my tat was simple and short, she set up me with the guy who does simple and short/walk-ins, Fernando. He was awesome; super easy to relate to, easy going and patient with my second-tattoo-nerdness. He took a lot of time with me to make sure it was properly placed and I am really grateful for that because I'm absolutely thrilled with the outcome.Several days have passed and it looks like half of my tattoo is disappearing. I got really concerned and sent an email & photo to Reta re: "help, I'm pretty sure I ruined it" and she once again assuaged my dorky concerns, schooling me on the variations in healing processes. She also advised that if I still was feeling uncomfortable with the way the color was turning out in a week that they'd gladly touch it up for me. Real talk though, there's nothing wrong with it, I just don't know anything about tattoos.The only thing that I don't love about fifth estate is their cash-only rule. Of course, they're not haters if you have to run to an ATM nearby.I highly recommend this shop. Read Less

I got my first tattoo ever there on Valentine's Day.  I went to Mary who was just amazing.  She took three images I sent her and combined them in to the perfect image--one I hadn't even imagined myself. It incorporated my late sister's exact signature. I love it.  I went with my friend who also got a perfect tat from Mary right after me. The place is clean and spacious and a very cool environment.  It took less time than I'd imagined and was beyond reasonable. Best shop hands down.Lex did my half sleeve a year or two ago. Puerto Rico theme. AMAZING work. Great shop, great atmosphere. Everyone in this shop is a professional. You're paying for GREAT artwork people, that is permanent, on your body. I haven't  had a chance to go back and get more work, but planning on having Lex finish and extend my half to a full sleeve.
