Once inside the wooden gates, visitors enter the realm of 19th century military life, experience guided tours, scenic views, heart-pounding musical performances and precision military demonstrations by the Fort Henry Guard. You will also see people representing the civilian population of the Fort as schoolteachers and soldiers' wives. The Fort also plays host to numerous special ceremonies and events that take place all season long.

The grounds were definitely rich in history to say the least; however, perhaps a guided tour would be better. The shops were a little deceiving as they appear as though one might find interesting souvenirs, but instead seem to be leased out to arts/craft-type retailers. There are a couple of restaurants on site and good washroom facilities. Lots of parking is available. In October there is a "Fort Fright" program. If you are planning a visit check the times as the fort is not open all year round. Their website contains up-to-date information.
The only thing I found off-putting was the use of women re-enactors as soldiers. Women could not be in the army in the 19th century - not sure why they do this - it takes away from the authenticity. Read Less

They did try and do re-enactments which was nice but need more training and practice. I wish I could help them with marching- people properly trained get annoyed with bad marching ! I can see my old di twisting off if he saw this.

I enjoyed my day here. The view of Kingston is lovely. The guided tour offered a bit of history. If you go on Wednesday during the day, for $5 more you can gain admittance to the night performance with theatre and fireworks. Fort Henry wants to celebrate protecting the land for the British Empire, but they don't want to tick off all the American tourists by being anti-American. Thus, the play has no focus. Going on and on about the music driving the soldiers is also a bit much. Good visuals, however. Lots of muskets and cannons going off. My mother was able to go almost everywhere in a borrowed wheel chair.
Just to add, we could not simply sit at the open-air restaurant at 3:30 overlooking the bay because the restaurant was going to open in the evening for a party. Give me a break! At 3:30? THAT was off putting. We had paid for the view with our tickets too! Read Less

Had we been told informed of this at time of reservation we would have went elsewhere for dinner. We proceeded to go inside the restaurant, the waitress brought our plastic cups for our water and carried them to the table having her fingers in...side the cups. Our dinner was a preset menu for $40 each. We had a choice of 4 entrees my mother and I had stuff pork and it was decent the mush that was served with it was disgusting. My husband had the salmon which was very over cooked. His meal was brought out as they served all the salmon entrees at the same time to everyone that was in the room we were in. Then the pork, needless to say his food was cold by the time we received our food. We were given a choice of two deserts and the three of us chose the strawberry shortcake which we have had before and it was just berries sliced on top of a biscuit, it was extremely dry. Needless to say we were very disappointed with our food. We don't mind paying for quality but this certainly wasn't worth it. Hi. I took my family to see the Tattoo last night. It really was wonderful, but I feel that I should pass on a comment about the food...or should I say lack of food. From information on the website it sounded like we would have a few options, so we decided that we would eat at the Bistro but was told when we got there that it was by reservation only. I didn't see that on the website or I would have made a reservation. Option 2 was to get a hot dog or some such but we foun...d out that there was only one other eating place and all they had were submarine sandwiches...ok, fair enough...but there was only 1 poor fellow working at the sub place. He was taking orders, working cash, making sandwiches and taking them out to people by calling out their names. Gotta hand it to him, he kept his cool because he had quite a long lineup of customers! After waiting 1/2 an hour I had a barely edible ice cold (bun was partially frozen?) sandwich, the kids went to the candy store and had gummy worms, everyone else had an apple from the handful that my son had the foresight to toss into his backpack. I hope that by speaking out that something could maybe be done to improve the catering..it was embarrassing and reflects badly on the Fort. Mehr anzeigen Read Less

The ceremony is a great show with cannons, mortar and muskets shooting. The drums are always enjoyable. The ghost tour was not the best one I've been on, but it was worth it just to wander around fort Henry empty at night. I was intensely disappointed by the new Redesigned Sunset Ceremony. The Fort Henry Guard were spectacular. Their hard work and intensity were clear throughout the show. However, I found all other aspects of the show horrifically disappointing. Charlotte and Michael were toted as the βstars of the showβ but both gave thoroughly forgettable performances. The most memorable aspects of their performances were the many mistakes, contradictions and awkward delivery of information. Go to the Fort, the history and the Guard are amazing.

Been here quite a few times I like it a lot it's a good historical site, every time we go I notice something new. This time we went for the sunset ceremony and a ghost tour afterwards. The ceremony is a great show with cannons, mortar and muskets shooting. The drums are always enjoyable. The ghost tour was not the best one I've been on, but it was worth it just to wander around fort Henry empty at night. There are also special events/shows here quite often so keep an eye out, last winter a great interactive light show was here in winter I'm hoping it's back next season so I can bring friends who have not been, it was amazing. I must say that I was quite disappointed in the Sunset Ceremony this year compared to last. I returned this year with relatives and I raved to them about the projections on the wall and the narration which was entirely gone! The Fort Henry Guard and Band were amazing as usual but the skit between "Charlotte Sinclair" and "Michael McCauley" was silly and distracting. Please return the show that I saw last summer! I went there after a long day on the road from Toronto to Quebec. It was a nice stop but I was quite surprised to see that the deck at the bottom at the fortress is for bar patrons only. I had to climb on the wall to take some pictures of the beautiful lake. There is a paid tour I didn't take so can't speak for. On a sunny day it offers great views of the city, river and lake. It was interesting, but very self directed. Didn't feel the $20 admission was worth while, but happy to support one of our national historic sites. Spent about an hour here and covered it all..

Nice place to visit but too expensive for a family. With two young children we spent around CAD 90 only for the entrance. This is way too much to visit a fort. I know they offer live performances but nothing justify this price. The fort was almost empty while Kingston was full of tourists. Lower the admission and more people will visit. And please make a family package to make it more affordable for families. Read Less

I went to the Sunset show on Wednesday because my friend has been recommending it for years and was really let down. I had heard the show was mostly the Guard doing awesome performances with intense music and projections and informative narration. The show I saw still had the Guard doing awesome things but the play portion was awkward. The play portion felt out of place with the rest and took away from the overall experience. I was disappointed I didnβt get the same experience that was recommended to me. Read Less

Skip the show, unless you feel like you can enjoy the Guard in spite of a bad play. I miss the old show. Read Less

I have been working as a vendor with Fort Henry Staff for events such as YGK Beerfest and the upcoming Rascal Flatts concert and just want to say thank you to all those involved in these great venues. The hill is a wonderful place to host events and thus far with all our experiences have been very positive! There are always things we learn from an event when it is happening or when it is over that we might do differently, but all in all I have nothing but praises for those we have worked witih thus far! Thanks! Read Less

We walked around Fort Henry a couple of times in the past to see the St. Lawrence River. Quite a view from up there. We haven't done the tour inside yet and that's something to look forward to. We were there 5 minutes before the fireworks started on July the 1st so we only made it to the bottom of the hill. We heard a band playing on the top of the hill and some flashing lights while the fireworks was going and we thought that was a bit weird but far enough to enjoy the fireworks. Read Less

We had to Waite in line for 40 minutes to get our and purchase some beer but had no idea there was another line up we could have skipped but eventually did do that. Inside the event the music and beer were great and we love that there was seating. However if you wanted extra beer tickets there was a very very long line. It is a good event and should be staffed accordingly. Also the city blocked off the street in front of city hall for some reason.. could not see any thing going on as it took us 35 minutes to go three blocks. It makes you not want to go downtown. Would buy tickets in advance had I know about the delays. Read Less
