I had my nose pierced several months ago by another shop & now that it had healed, I wanted to change the stud to a ring. Stupidly, I went to Claire's for the jewelry & got recommended a 22 gauge by the lady working there (which is way too small). After changing it myself, I noticed it was still really painful after a couple of days so I decided to come see Doug at Heros & Villains to get the right size. Even though he was just changing the jewelry, he provided me with so much information regarding sizing, healing & the REAL cleaning process. He also informed me that my nose started to create a trench scar (something I had never heard of). I was very impressed with his experience & knowledge, I definitely learned a lot more than I would have at any other shop, guaranteed. Shortly after my beloved Doug the Pug passed away a year & a half ago, I went to a tattoo parlour to have a commemorative tattoo put on my wrist. I was never happy with it & even returned to the tattoo artist to have it fixed, but it just didn't work for me. Then last year, on the anniversary of Doug's passing, my friend who was like a sister to me died. I decided I wanted to commemorate her, too. A few days ago, on a whim, I reached out to Heroes & Villains and booked a consultation with Bill McVey. I had been grappling for months on this and Bill was definitely up for the challenge. He presented me with ideas I had not even considered and in the end I loved his concept so much, I went for it! Had 2 piercings (rook and nose) done by Dan. All I have to say is he knows his stuff, was very thorough with answering my questions (even giving answers before I could ask the question), and made me feel very relaxed!! Both piercings were pretty painless - only had a dull ache the first day and then forgot I actually had piercings unless I touched or hit them somehow by accident. Number one shop for piercings, hands down, both piercers are amazing at what they do. Doug has pierced me many of times, not only does he take his time and do it correctly, he walks you through every step, as well as he teaches you a bit about the different types of jewelry out on the market. I've been to two other piercers, only for lobe piercings, rather than going to Doug & two of them are extremely crooked & were pierced with low-grade jewelry. Me and my friend came here to get piercings from Dan and he was amazing. He was so thorough and I was amazed how he ensured all his tools were sterile and showed us that he disposed of them after. I have had quite a few piercings and it was nice not to just go in and out but actually get to know the piercer and a thorough  explanation of everything. I went in for new body jewelry as i heard they have a large selection to choose from. Dan was excellent. He took the time to educate me on the different options I had and was very professional. He was upfront about pricing on all pieces. Dan is an expert piercer and I felt very confident in his recommendations. Dan is the only person I will get pierced by or recommend others get pierced by. He knows what he's doing and has fine tuned his skills. What I will say is this: These people seriously need to work on their customer service skills. No I don't need you to hold my hand and give me a hug, but I do expect to be treated with respect. Dan will talk in a very condescending and rude way and I have experienced this multiple times. I agree with every idea he expresses, but he can go about doing so in a way that lacks tact. Entering a tattoo shop is scary enough for some people, and this particular place can be less than friendly. When people critique Dan's delivery, the shop conflates people being upset with what Dan says rather than how he says it. Just brace yourself before you enter this place. That being said, this IS the only shop I would recommend getting pierced at. Better to get pierced by a rude expert than a friendly dude who will do it poorly. Read Less

Herors and Villains, HEAVY on the Villains  So, I enter the shop to no acknowledgement whatsoever, everybody was talking about comic book release dates and Superman episodes. No biggie, I'm patient. Eventually a girl from the back room comes out & asks to be of assistance. I just wanted some simple writing down my arm, no biggie. Well, it seemed like a huge inconvenience for the dudes behind the counter & I should have taken the hint and just walked out. Instead I asked how much they charge, the guy said $170/hour. I said ok, long story short, my tattoo took him 30 minutes & he charged me $170. When I pointed this out, he said "oh no, I agreed to do it it for 170" ugh. I felt intimidated & ripped off. The tattoo isn't even that awesome. I'm sorry but I would advise somewhere else, these guys really could care less. Bad experience for me, hopefully it's not for you but I know there are better places in Calgary, my second tattoo was a good experience. I hate feeling regret, but I regret going to Heroes and Villains, they definitely seemed more Villains than Heroes. Read Less

Got a helix piercing from Doug, who explained everything extremely thoroughly, gave me his opinion on the placement, was super patient, and just extremely professional. He justified everything he said with explanations that were logical, well-researched, and made a lot of sense. Then he ran through exactly what the steps would be before proceeding with the piercing. The room where I got the piercing looked like a medical lab, with a lot of sterilization equipment- that was a great sign. It's been about four days and it looks good so far. Highly recommend this shop. Went there a year ago for a sideburn piercing. Not only was Dan awesome because he talked to me about all his senior kitties (I work in the vet industry), but he showed me videos and pictures of them too! I previously had my sideburn pierced years prior on the opposite side, and that piercings rejected within a month or two. I've had my sideburn piercing done by Dan for just over a year now. Don't get me wrong, I did have some issues with it, but s...till impressed that it never rejected like my previous piercing. Went on the website a few minutes ago as my friend and I are planning a piercing together before I move out of province, and found out that Chrys is now an artist there which makes me incredibly happy as I have been trying to track him down since he did a tattoo for me about 8 years ago. Piercer Dan, I would like to thank you for the unbelievable speech you gave me in regard to my Monroe Piercing. I came in to simply ask if you could change the jewelry and you proceeded to slam the place that did it and tell me that I might as well take it out, let it heal and have you re-do it. You didn't even look at it!I told the place that did it what you said, they will be paying you a visit to discuss. They have been in business for twenty years. I also visited two other, renowned, Calgary based piercing places and asked their opinion. Neither of them had a problem with my piercing. I even visited a Dr. and he said it was completely fine and healing nicely. Not cool to be slamming every other piercing place and I hope I am the only customer you spoke to as if I were stupid and completely irrelevant to the world.-----------------------------------------------My piercing is fine. Let me start by saying this is not just a review to slam Piecer Dan, written by some angry jerk. It has taken me a long time to decide to actually say something, but after getting a piercing from my place back home again I feel like I can't be quite anymore. I take responsibility for going against my instinct and going through with the piercing, but I also believe that that is beside the point. I got a snug piercing by Dan almost a year ago, which I can honestly say is the worst piercing experience of my life. I came into the back room at the shop where he works expecting for everything to be similar to how it was when I went to my parlour. Needless to say, it was not. There was no conversation regarding placement, there was no conversation regarding the jewelry that I wanted, and there was no conversation about healing time. Dan also brought his apprentice back to look at my ear while they were deciding where to place it, but he did not ask my permission to bring someone else in and did not introduce me when he did, which made me feel very uncomfortable.After my piercing was complete, I was told that the jewelry was larger to account for swelling, which I have never had before and have never had a problem. It was also not until I asked about after care that he told me his opinion. After care information was conveyed to me in what felt like an aggressive, condescending lecture. I also asked about stretching my ear lobes, to find out that he uses a scalpel on every client. I have been getting piercings for 10 years, I have nine of them, and I have NEVER heard of using a scalpel to pierce anyone that does not have scar tissue. I left the parlour that day feeling horrible about my decision, but I figured "well, at least I have the piercing I wanted..."Fast forward a month of pain, swelling, and my jewelry constantly coming lose: I was sitting as my desk one day, and my snug literally fell out. I have never had that happen in all the years and piercings I have gotten, so I didn't know what to do. I washed the barbell and tried to put it back in, but it was so swollen I couldn't get it through. It was at that point I gave up and decided to go back to my place the next time I was in California.Well, I did go back to my place. I now have a faux snug (a conch-helix because my ear cannot support a snug), that I chose the jewelry for, the jewelry is the correct size, and I have had minimal swelling. The staff at pierced out spoke to me with respect, treated me kindly, asked my permission before doing anything, and narrated the process to me. I am creating this review is because the experience I had with Dan and the experience I had at Pierced Out in San Jose, CA were so vastly different that it made me angry.One thing I will say for Dan is that he does use very high quality jewelry, and his instruments are very clean. Unfortunately that is where my praise stops. I would not recommend going to him for piercings, and I hope this review causes him to reevaluate some of his practices when dealing with customers. I have so much to say. I heard amazing things about this tattoo shop, but I was let down. Once by friend who had gained sharp scaring that shows through her tattoo. The very same tattoo artist with my tattoo refused to add in little extra bits of color which would have taken 10 - 15 mins, which I asked for from the very first consultation but kept telling me to think about it even after the 3rd visit, I was also concerned that she did not care about how my tattoo turned out and wanted to finish it as fast as possible, and rushed an almost all black tattoo. It was a terrible experience and I will never return even for touch ups. Chelsea was her name.. Stay away. Take pride in your work, and listen to your clients requests, its not your decision what people want on their bodies, and stop being so rough. On a good note, your fantastic artist, take your time. I got an artist here do my tattoo I asked her to copy a tattoo that I found on the internet and put on my calf.  immediately said she could do it no problem. But she forgot to measure my calf when I came in and never asked me to come in again and get it measured.I asked her to do a fox with references attached to my emails, and she did the EXACT OPPOSITE that I asked for. (Ex. Sent her a reference with a fox body I felt like what was shaped in the right way I wanted, but hated the face, so I sent her another attachment of a head and face I did like.) She did what SHE wanted, and did the head I specifically asked her not too, so it seemed like she didn't review my emails. I am truly not a picky person I just wanted the head to look realistic instead of stylized. She didn't understand the natural anatomy of the animal I wanted, (which I sent a references to her right away.) In the late night before I was going to get it tattooed, she said she didn't want to tattoo me because she had to change to much (she never did what I asked simply for) and she said I should have chosen a different artist. SHE broke the contract, AND she kept my $100 dollars without trying to correct her business ethics. Some people won't respect you. I have a feeling she was being unprofessional because I'm young. I've been coming to this shop for years and have had every piercing on my body done by Dan, even an earlobe reconstruction that has healed amazing. People are shocked that my ears were ever stretched in the first place. I also get tattooed by Chris Dunn, he's an extremely talented artist and I couldn't be happier with the results. I visited this place with a friend in order to get a consult regarding a nose piercing. Unfortunately I received one of the worst customer service experiences of my life. The piercer chose to insult me regarding my piercing and the way I was cleaning it and then went beyond that to personally insult me regarding my intelligence and chosen profession. The piercer then went on to pierce my friend (after his performance I was not letting him come near me) using questionable sterile technique (laying tools on a dirty paper towel and no explanation regarding sterilization techniques) and then rudely remarking on how she tolerated the pain of the piercing. We were both astounded and very upset about the way we were treated. I had gone into heroes and villians expecting a great experience because of referrals I had received from friends. It is unfortunate that this one employee has reflected so poorly on this establishment as I and every one I have told about the experience will be looking elsewhere. I will say that we were not able to get pierced by piercer dan who everyone speaks so highly of. Instead we had an apprentice piercer who I believe was named doug. Honestly I would steer clear but if you do go I would recommend not to get bullied by anyone, despite these guys being 'professional piercers' Me and my friend regret letting ourselves be intimidated to stay. piercing is an experience you should go into with mutual trust and respect with your piercer and that is not something I or my friend received that day. I recently got my nose pierced here by piercer Dan, and I admit that I was a little nervous because of some of the reviews on here. However he was extremely professional and friendly. He walked me through everything I needed to know about caring for my piercing and explained why they use the type of jewelry that they do and answered all of my questions. He gave me simple care steps to follow and so far there has been no pain and no infection. They had a cool selection of studs and the place was immaculately clean. Piercer Dan is great at what he does. Although he is very insistent on you getting his kind of jewelry (because the rest is apparently shit), he is talented and does care. I have 2 piercings from here, and a tattoo. I am generally happy with all of them. However, H and V really really need to work on their customer service. I've been into the shop around 10 times, and every time there are between 3-7 guys just sitting around. They don't address you when you walk in. They dont stand up and say hi. They aren't friendly or professional (which is what you want when you are getting holes put in your body). I dont expect the nicest people ever, but...come on, I'm a client. Show a little...anything.  For the tattoo I wanted, I had a clear design set out. When i went to get it done and she created a mock tattoo for the outline, i asked to get it a little longer and she reacted like it would be the biggest hassle of her life to change it (when i am the one getting a permanent piece put on my body).  However, tattoo prices aren't too bad. So i referred my friend here, who also received the poor customer service and lack of attention. The tattoo artist claimed he wouldnt do the tattoo she wanted unless it was three times the size (making it very large).  He then proceeded to make fun of her for wanting such a girly tattoo. All I can say is worst experience I have ever had! First when I walked in they argued over who would have to take me as a client even before they knew what I wanted to get done. Then they told me they would not do what I wanted to get done because I didn't have any tatttoo's when I fact I have a full back piece that wraps around my ribs and I have 1/2 sleeves on my arms.... It's winter not many people have visible tattoos when dressed in winer gear. Then they just made the excuse that it was because you can not do small detail on a small piece. I appreciate that maybe they are not good enough artists to do the tattoo that I had drawn up, where as every other shop looked at it and didn't seem to see it as a problem... In fact they didn't even take the time to look at the drawings they just said they would not take me on as a client because they would not be able to do it. All in all I thought they were rude, I feel like I dodged a bullet... Anyone that judgmental and lazy can not possibly be a good artist.
